UNAIR students ranked top 3 in international event for livestock waste innovation

Universitas Airlangga ( UNAIR ) students have made another achievement. Aidatul Fitriyah, a student of English language and literature, and a veterinary student, Azhar Burhanuddin, won Top 3 in “The Social Entrepreneurship International Challenge, ” a collaborative event from Prokompas, Research Synergy Foundation, and Macquarie University Australia.

In an interview with UNAIR NEWS on Friday, January 6, 2023, Aidatul Fitriyah or Afriya said that the competition she participated in consisted of several stages. The first stage is the collection of innovation papers, followed by the ten finalists’ announcements and online presentations, until the final stage and the announcement.

Furthermore, Afriya revealed that in the competition, he initiated an innovation called FAMOS. The idea of FAMOS departs from its concern for global warming, which is increasingly becoming a significant problem in the world.

FAMOS is the commercialization of methane gas from recycled livestock waste to become an alternative fuel with low carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Cow dung was chosen as the material because it is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gases, so the use of livestock waste is expected to overcome global warming and achieve the seventh point in the SDGs (sustainable development goals).

According to Afriya, making the Top 3 was not an easy thing. She experienced challenges because the writing time was quite short. On the other hand, she also has to prepare a video presentation and a poster.

“It took quite a while to work on it, while we were also required to make a video presentation and an essay explaining poster,” said Afriya.

However, she admitted that she was quite satisfied with the results. Representing the team, she hopes their innovation can be realized with the collaboration of various parties, including the government and investors. Thus, the idea that is carried out can benefit the public.

“Hopefully, the innovations carried out can benefit various groups of people and obtain support from both the government and investors so they can be realized,” she said.

Floating hospital of UNAIR geared for sailing across ten islands to provide healthcare

Ksatria Airlangga Floating Hospital (RSTKA) gears its sails to provide healthcare services. This time, the targets of RSTKA’s service are ten small islands in Sumenep Regency. The community service will take place from May 14 to July 10, 2022.

The Governor of East Java and the leadership from UNAIR officially send the floating hospital off in a ceremony. The Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) UNAIR Prof Amin Alamsjah PhD attended the ceremony on behalf of UNAIR Rector.

The Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa said the humanitarian mission of RSTKA was a noble activity carried out with the cooperation of all parties from various disciplines at UNAIR. She also hopes that these noble activities and intentions will lead to equal welfare of the community in various aspects.

In the ceremony held at Tanjung Perak Main Harbormaster Office, May 14, Prof. Amin said that UNAIR through RSTKA, hopefully, can be an example of efforts to improve the quality of services to the community, especially on remote islands. Furthermore, he continued, the service is also part of implementing higher education Tri Dharma.
“Thus, we would like to thank all those who support this program. In particular, the Governor who continues providing support and other positive things to RSTKA,” he said.

Furthermore, Prof Amin also hopes that the services provided by RSTKA can be better in the future. He also emphasized that there will be more service voyages, and it could continue more frequently.

“We all expect voyage programs with the concept of health services like this to be held more frequently,” he said.

On this cruise, many faculties of UNAIR have been involved. In addition to doctors from the Faculty of Medicine, a team from the Faculty of Pharmacy will also provide education and plant medicinal plants. A team of Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline will provide education in transforming motor vehicles into electric vehicles and provide tools to measure oxygen levels.

There are also those from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine who provide training to produce feed for cattle, goats, and chickens. With many faculties involved, this voyage is expected to greatly impact the community.

UNAIR to mass-produce Artemia and salt simultaneously

The high demand in the global market for shrimp and fish commodities has led more cultivators to maximize the role of shrimp seed feed (benur). It includes Artemia sp. as natural seawater, freshwater, ornamental fish, or crustacean seeds feed because it has high nutrition and a good mouth opening.

Universitas Airlangga’s Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPK) lecturers and students successfully mass-produced Artemia to help shrimp and salt farmers. The FPK UNAIR lecturers are: Prof Mochmmad Amin Alamsjah Ir MSi PhD, Dr Woro Hastuti Satyantini Ir MSi, Dr A Shofy Mubarak SPi MSi, Dr Eng Patmawati SPi Msi, Dr Eng Sapto Andriyono SPi MT, Dr Laksmi Sulmartiwi SPi MP, Daruti SPi MP, Muhamad Amin SPi MSc PhD.

Cultivators kept using commercial Artemia, marketed in canned packaging weighing 425 grams priced around Rp 700.000. It could increase expense costs in fish or shrimp farming. Therefore, Reza Istiqomatul Hidayah, FPK UNAIR postgraduate student and the Artemia cultivation team technician, revealed that Artemia can be a golden opportunity that could be maximized.

Through the financial opportunity from LPDP’s 14 billion multi-year research fund carried out from 2021 to 2023. Their party studied three suitable treatments for producing the best Artemia biomass and salt production.

“The first treatment is with Dunaliella sp. but the growth was worst compared to others. The second was using Tetraselmis sp. It resulted in large feces production. Third, using Chaetoceros sp., the result shows good and big Artemia because of the high protein,” explained Reza when UNAIR NEWS interviewed on Wednesday, March 09, 2022.

Entering the second year of LPDP funding, her party continues to do experiments until finally found that the feed combination of chaetoceros sp. and rice bran is suitable for Artemia sp. growth and nutritional consistency.

“Currently pathogen-free test process is done, so God willing, we predicted this second year the benefit could be felt by many fish or shrimp farmers,” the Artemia technician continued.

Besides producing Artemia biomasses, the funding recipient team also produced salt from artemia farming waste. “Water from the siphon process (ed: waste cleaning) is dried under the sun every day, and then it will become crystallized salt, so this cultivation is not wasted,” she added.

Furthermore, to improve salt farm productivity and improve artemia cultivation massively, FPK UNAIR has cooperated with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries of Madura Island, including Pamekasan and Sumenep. Those locations are very potential, and they can improve the economy.

Prof Nicolaas discovers five things in joint replacement surgery research

Prof Nicolaas C. Budhiparama dr PhD SpOT(K) FICS has been inaugurated as Honorary Professor for medical science by Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR).

The inauguration was held on Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at the Garuda Mukti Hall, UNAIR Management Office. Prof Nicolaas has dedicated himself and his education to Indonesian orthopedic fields. He was one of Habibie Prize 2021 recipients. It was awarded for his contribution in various latest surgery techniques in the orthopedic field, including the computer navigation-based surgery.

The doctor who was A.S.I.A (Arthroplasty Society in Asia) 2019-2021 President has also achieved MURI Records as an Indonesian scientist that served in three world orthopedic organizations.

Prof Nicolaas finished his final thesis at Leiden University on Total Knee Arthroplasty: The Asian Perspective on Patient Outcome, Implants, and Complications. Through his research, Prof Nicolaas found room for improvement in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures to improve patient satisfaction. TKA or joint replacement operation is an operative procedure mostly done in osteoarthritis (OA) final stadium. “Research is done as a means to improve TKA patient’s satisfaction both from patient factor and surgery factor,” he explained. Prof Nicolaas and team compared the population in the United States of America, Europe, and Asia. The Indonesian Orthopedic and traumatology specialist mentioned five points in his doctoral thesis.

Knee implant unsuitable for Indonesian and Dutch Patient

Prof Nicolaas and team found that caucasian residents have different dimensions of femur and tibia bones. Caucasian residents have a larger size compared to Asians. Increasing size range of tibialis and femoral components for anteroposterior dimension will increase optimum match percentage for Asian and Caucasian patients,” he added.

The comparison of measures of clinical outcomes of Asian Patients with North Americans

The Indonesia World Records Museum (MURI) recipient in the medical and sports field found that the Asian population has a range of motion (ROM) significantly worse than North Americans. “Higher pain levels in Asian population compared to North Americans are perhaps caused by cultural differences and/ or social-economic reasons,” he mentioned.

Circumferential Patellar Denervation in decreased knee pain

Patella cauterization results showed no differences in anterior knee pain, functional external, and compilation rate compared to non-patella cauterization in primary TKA patients. The results also did not recommend circular patella cauterization on patella for patients undergoing TKA.

Are new discoveries always the best?

In Prof Nicolaas’ research, there was evidence to the contrary discovery regarding whether accelerometer-based computer navigation reduces coronal field outlier number. No higher quality evidence shows attractive advantages from computer navigation technology. “We concluded that this technology is not recommended to be adopted widely,” he revealed.

Prophylaxis Tromboemboli Vena (VTE) for Joint Arthroplasty and Knee

Prof Nicolaas found three continents, America, Europe, and Asia have different guidelines. It was predicted that the VTE number is found higher in Caucasians. “Multimodal approach focusing in early mobilization post-operation and mechanical prophylaxis usage, other than chemoprophylaxis is very important,” he concluded.

UNAIR Rector emphasizes importance of inter-sectoral collaboration in handling problems

Closing 2021, UNAIR has inaugurated another four new professors. The ceremony was held on Wednesday, December 12, in Garuda Mukti Hall, Campus C UNAIR.

The newly inaugurated professors are Dr. Budi Suprapti, Dra., M.Si., Apt in Pharmacokinetics – Clinical Pharmacy, Faculty of Pharmacy; Dr. Nyoman Anita Damayanti, drg., MS in Health Administration and Policy, Faculty of Public Health; Dr. Rini Devijanti Ridwan, drg., M.Kes in Oral Biology, Faculty of Dental Medicine; and Prof. Dr. Sutinah, Dra., MS in the field of Sociology, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences.

In his speech, UNAIR Rector Prof. Nasih said that professorship is a mandate, duty, and title which is oriented for the benefit and welfare of mankind. The addition of four new professors will add new energy.

“Hopefully, the professors will give their best contribution,” he said.

From several of their ideas presented, he continued, the point is to participate in glorifying and prospering the people in their respective fields. However, collaboration is needed to produce more efficient and effective handling.

According to him, there will be no effectiveness without good collaboration between various sectors. The collaboration will produce synergy, therefore, the urge to work systematically is the key in dealing with the problems faced together.

“We hope that this collaboration process can be continued so that the problems faced are quickly resolved,” he said.

In the end, according to Prof. Nasih, UNAIR’s strategy to achieve future glory is to contribute significantly both locally, nationally, and globally. So there is a need for movement and collaboration of all components and elements of UNAIR to be able to give meaning to the lives of others.

“I hope the professors who are currently inaugurated will contribute even more in the future and, of course, based on encouragement from all parties,” he hoped.

Four new professors

Four new professors delivered their scientific orations. First, Dr. Budi Suprapti, Dra., M.Si., Apt delivered her scientific oration on “The Challenges of Clinical Pharmacy in Individualizing Therapy.” It was explained that pharmaceutical services are still often perceived by many parties as services that only focus on fulfilling quality and affordable medicines. Globally, the pharmaceutical profession has experienced significant growth and development over the past few decades, going through three major periods of pharmacy in the 20th century: traditional (preparing and distributing drugs), transitional, and patient-oriented development stages.

Second, Dr. Nyoman Anita Damayanti, drg., MS delivered an oration on “The Power of Collaboration for Maximum Value of Public Health Programs”. She offered the concept of the importance of collaboration in implementing health programs and efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality in understanding the broad field of public health science.

Third, Dr. Rini Devijanti Ridwan, drg., M.Kes delivered an oration “Oral Microbiology Before, Now, and Later.” Oral microbiology, also known as dental microbiology, is the science of diseases in the oral cavity, especially those caused by microorganisms. Prof. Rini said that oral conditions or dental microbiology were the initial discovery of microbes in the oral cavity.

The basic form of oral microorganisms will be obtained through oral or dental microbiology.

Lastly, Prof. Dr. Sutinah, Dra., MS delivered the oration “Capitalism and the Threat of Exploitation: Efforts to Fulfill the Rights and Protection of Outsourcing Workers in Indonesia.” According to her, in the era of increasingly competitive business competition, companies focus on their core business work. Meanwhile, other supporting work is delegated to other parties (outsourced, ed). It becomes the company’s strategy to increase profits and develop investment. (*)
