Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University Produces “Face Shield” to Alleviate the Shortage of Medical Supplies in Hospitals

The Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, develops face shields that are safe and meet quality standards. The frame is made of lightweight PP+TPE, providing comfort to the forehead, and wearing the shield comfortably for long periods of time becomes possible. The face shield can also be cleaned with soapy water or disinfectant and the transparent sheet is made of anti-fog-coated PET sheets that help reduce fog during operation.

The face shield is a result of faculty cooperation within the Department of Otolaryngology, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. Designed with 3D printing technology through the prototyping process, the shield prototype has been tested by physicians. During development, the plastic injection molding was created and tested to various hardness, color, elasticity, and smoothness. The whole process was completed within 7 days, which is faster than the normal face shield design-to-production period of 2 months.

The Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University together with Sirikomol Enterprise Co. Ltd. and Meticuly Co. Ltd., a corporate spin-off from the Faculty of Engineering, have joined to develop the face shields and have become a medium for face shield manufacturers wishing to alleviate the shortage of medical supplies in hospitals
