The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 has been released. Tomsk Polytechnic University not only remained the first among Russian universities in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 for Engineering – Petroleum but also improved its position in the global list of universities, ranking 23rd in the subject area.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021: Engineering – Petroleum was first released in 2020. At that time, TPU ranked 26th, topping the list of Russian universities.
To compile the ranking, four indicators are taken into account: academic reputation, employer reputation, citation per paper and h-index citation. According to the 2021 rankings, TPU was given an overall score of 74.5 points. Moreover, the academic reputation score has increased to 71.9 over the last year. The employer reputation score of 81.3 remained high as well.
“The improvement of TPU position in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021: Engineering – Petroleum proves that the university goes in the right direction, efficiently combining scientific, educational and engineering agenda, as well as actively cooperating with its industrial partners. Undoubtedly, the TPU School of Earth Sciences and Engineering together with Heriot-Watt Petroleum Engineering Approved Support Centre make a huge contribution to this result.
Moreover, TPU increased its score in academic reputation, gaining 71.9 out of 100 possible. These results were made possible due to high publication output of TPU scientists, who have increased the number of scientific articles in Q1 and Q2 journals, their active cooperation with international scientists having high h-index, and participation in international and interdisciplinary research projects, meeting current challenges of the global scientific community agenda.
Besides, the TPU scientists are actively developing cutting-edge interdisciplinary fields, including, for instance, oilfield chemistry, machine learning in geology and field development.
The TPU employer reputation indicator remains high. TPU is one of the leaders among Russian universities in terms of research and development (about 2 bln rubles per year). The university scientists and engineers work on solving current and breakthrough tasks for the benefit of big companies, for instance, such a successful large-scale project as Paleozoy, aimed at exploration and development of hard-to-recover oil reserves, and a suite of technologies for geologic and hydrodynamic modelling of oil and gas deposits,” Andrey Yakovlev, Acting Rector of TPU, says.
The QS World University Rankings 2021 covered 51 subject areas and ranked 1,453 institutions from 157 countries. TPU entered 10 rankings. For the first time, the university entered the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021 for Mathematics, ranking 451-500th.
Furthermore, TPU has improved its position in a number of other subjects, for instance, in the QS World University Rankings 2021, it is ranked 345th for Natural Sciences instead of 386th in 2020 and 251-300th for Chemistry instead of 351-400th in 2020.
