Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia holds Global Business, Management and Entrepreneurship Conference 2022

Business Education Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia in collaboration with Co-hosts, University of North Sumatra (USU), Tourism Polytechnic NHI Bandung, Indonesian Institute of Education (IPI) and University of Garut (UNIGA) held The 7th UPI Global Conference on Business, Management and Entrepreneurship (UPI-GC-BME 2022) on Monday, August 8, 2022. The UPI Global Conference on Business, Management and Entrepreneurship was officially opened by Rector Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia Prof. Dr. M. Solehuddin., M.Pd., MA.

Prof. Dr. Hj. Ratih Hurriyati, MP as the Conference Chair explained that UPI-GC-BME 2022 is the seventh conference held in order to improve and develop a strong academic culture and sustainability for lecturers, students, and practitioners globally. Prof. Dr. Eeng Ahman, M.S as the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Business Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia explained that this conference provides an opportunity for delegates to exchange ideas and new implementation experiences, build business or research connections, and find Global Partners for future collaboration.

According to Prof. Dr. Hj. Ratih Hurriyati, MP, UPI-GC-BME 2022 took the theme: “The Utilization of Sustainable Digital Business, Entrepreneurship, and Management as a Strategic Approach in the New Normal Era” with the aim of providing a media platform for educators, researchers , scholars, managers, graduate students and business people from diverse cultural backgrounds to present and discuss their research, knowledge and innovations in the fields of business, management and entrepreneurship.

Keynote Speakers of the UPI Global Conference on Business, Management and Entrepreneurship, namely Dr. (H.C.) Ir Airlangga Hartarto, MBA, MMT, IPU as the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia. Prof. Dr. Gangqiang Zheng (Tony), M.Ed, Professor of Zhejiang Technical Institute of Economics China who discussed the Utilising Workers’ Skills for Improving Green Competitiveness to Address the Challenges of Greening of Industries. Prof. Dr. Vanessa Gaffar, S.E., Ak., MBA., CSBA, Professor of the Faculty of Economics and Business Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia who discussed Tourism & Digitalization, Strategic Approach In New Normal Era. Assoc. Prof. Affero Ismail, Ph.D, from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) Malaysia who discussed The Emerging of Metaverse in Digital Era and Dr. Indra Cahya Uno, M.Sc Founder OKe OCe and the leadership of PT. Saratoga Investama Sedaya Indonesia which discusses Independent Successful Entrepreneurs.

The conference in 2022 was led by moderator Denny Andriana, SE., PGDip., MBA., Aj., CMA., CA who is a lecturer in the Accounting Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business Education, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia and was attended by 304 participants both as presenters and participants. Participants of the UPI Global Conference on Business, Management and Entrepreneurship come from within and outside the country such as Ghana, Malaysia, China, Korea, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Egypt, as well as from various regions in Indonesia. Over 181 papers were selected for a rigorous peer-review process, and these papers will be published in conference proceedings.

The participants presented their best articles on various topics in parallel sessions which presented their best articles in the fields of Organizational Behavior, Leadership & Human Resource Management, Innovation, Operations & Supply Chain Management, Marketing Management, Financial Management & Accounting, Strategic Management, Entrepreneurship & Contemporary Issues , Economic Education, and Green Business. Articles presented at this conference were selected through a rigorous peer review process with the advantage of getting a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) unit code, and will be published in two internationally reputed publishers, namely Atlantis Press, Springer Nature which has a reputation for the SCOPUS index, Web of Science, and Google Scholar.

ITS continues its eighth inbound staff mobility program offline

After the COVID-19 outbreak halted physical mobility programs for 2 years, Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember held the 8th Inbound Staff Mobility (ISM) program offline in Surabaya on June 6–11, 2022. Initiated in 2017, this program gives participants the opportunity to learn best practices and to build international networks between higher-education institutions all around the world.

Twenty-three participants from 11 institutions in Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Poland, and Turkey, such as Universiti Putra Malaysia, Mahidol University, and University of Szczecin, joined the event. ISM consisted of visits to related units and departments, student sessions, and workshop sessions covering various topics in internationalization of education, such as managing mobility programs, developing and maintaining partnerships, and conducting short programs.

This program is conducted in parallel with the Internationalization Training and Workshop for Indonesian Universities (Pelatihan Penguatan Kantor Urusan Internasional). Thus, all the participants have the chance to build even wider networks in Indonesia through the Exhibition Partnership event managed in the Global Kampong Building.

Besides the workshops and networking event, ISM is also a way to present Indonesia’s culture and tourism. During the program, ISM participants learned Bahasa Indonesia and experienced dancing to Tari Poco-Poco and Saman Dance. In the last day of the program, participants had the chance to experience a 1-day trip to one of the most iconic Indonesian tourism spots, Mount Bromo.

UPI successfully holds international conference on language, literature, culture, education

Faculty of Language and Arts Education, FPBS, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI), Bandung held the sixth International Conference on Language, Literature, Culture, and Education (ICOLLITE) with the theme “Revitalization of Language, Literature, Culture, an Education in The Era Digital Era”.

This conference was conducted online on Wednesday, 03 August 2022, presenting Prof. Dr. Yayat Sudaryat, M.Hum (Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia) and Prof. Kimura Toshiaki (Universitas Tohoku, Japan) as the keynote speakers; Prof. Julian Millie (Monash University, Australia) and Dr. Luh Ade Mayani, S.S., M.Hum. (Director of SEAMEO QITEP in Language/Language Development and Fostering Agency, Indonesia) as the Plenary Speakers; and Dr. Ida Widia. M.Pd and Dr. Asep Sopian, S.Pd., M.Ag (Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia) as the Featured Speakers.

This seminar was officially opened by the Vice Rector for Education and Students Affairs, Prof. Dr. Didi Sukyadi, M.A. in his opening remarks, he congratulated and extended his appreciation to all committee of The 6th ICOLLITE for successfully conducting this seminar. “This seminar is very important for discussing language-related issues in this digital era,” he added. This was the sixth international seminar held by the Faculty of Language and Literature Education attended by professors, scholars, researchers, Indonesian language activists, students, and speakers from other countries such as Algeria, Andorra, Australia, India, Japan, Malaysia and so son as many as 23 participants. This seminar was livened up by a show from Katumbiri, one of Student Activity Units of the faculty.

This seminar aimed at revitalizing language, literature, culture and education in facing the dynamics of the changes in the digital era. The Dean of FPBS, UPI, Prof. Dr. Tri Indri Hardini, M.Pd. expected that it will result in extraordinary insight related to language and there will be mutual support and cooperation in order to be able to implement Kurikulum Merdeka Belajar (Freedom of Learning Curriculum) imposed by the Ministry of Education and Culture, Republic of Indonesia. The scope of this seminar was related to various aspects of language, literature, culture, and education as the place for experts and professionals to share their research and experience on this issue. In this seminar, presenters and participants were encouraged to discuss and disseminate the current issues and offer solutions for the challenge of this era. Discussion on digital literacy trend this time was expected to pave the way to learn from each other for the advancement of the global community regardless of the social, economic, and cultural background.

In this 6th ICOLLITE 6, the presenters and participants were not only provided with materials from the speakers, but also some Sundanese traditional art show presented by UKM Katumbiri, FPBS. This was not only to give entertainment, but also as an effort to promote Sundanese traditional arts to the international world. To close this session, Dr. Rudi Adi Nugroho, M.Pd., the Chair of the 6th ICOLLITE said that this event was held successfully, attended by not only local presenters but also international presenters from many countries. He further stated that this activity was made possible due to the cooperation and assistance from various parties, including lecturers, administration staff, and students of FPBS. He expected that this event will generate some ideas and solutions in revitalizing language, literature, culture and education to face the global challenges in this digital era.

ITS wins Indonesian robot contest KRI 2022

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has carved another achievement in the field of robotics and crowned the grand champion in the Kontes Robot Indonesia (KRI), the national robot contest, on July 3rd, 2022, after snapping five winnings in five out of six categories.

KRI is a reputable annual Indonesian robotic contest for students in the field of robot design and engineering held by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. It offers six contest divisions, including the Indonesian ABU Robot, SAR robot, wheeled-soccer robot, humanoid-soccer robot, dance robot, and thematic robot contest. The 2022 KRI was hosted by ITS and participated by 313 teams from 114 universities.

ITS teams proudly brought home four gold and one bronze medals and several awards in the best strategy for humanoid and the wheeled-robot categories. ITS team IRIS collected the gold medals from the Soccer Robot (Wheeled) Contest category, ICHIRO from the Soccer Robot (Humanoid) Contest category, RIVAL, which won the Thematic Robot Contest category, and RIDER team for the category of ABU Indonesia Robot contest. Meanwhile, the bronze medal was presented by ABINARA-1, which won SAR Robot Contest category.

In addition, IRIS, ICHIRO, and RIDER teams were awarded Best Strategy. Team RIVAL was awarded Best Design. The winning was even more remarkable; it made ITS the grand champion for five consecutive years and brought home the back-to-back trophy.

Empowering women in Indonesia and the Philippines

World University Association for Community Development (WUACD) Universitas Airlangga held another summer program. This year, WUACD collaborates with the UNAIR Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) to discuss the Community Business Capacity Development Related to GEDSI (Gender Equality, Disability, and Social Inclusion).

In the webinar held on Tuesday, July 13, 2022, the WUACD Summer Program featured the experts and discussed the woman empowerment strategy through business schemes. The event was attended by the Vice-Dean for Research, Innovation, and Community Development Affairs of UNAIR FEB, Dr Ahmad Rizki Sridadi. He said that women and children currently face lots of violence and discrimination.

It was shown from the Human Development Index (IPM), Gender Development Index (IPG), and Gender Empowerment Index (IDG) that they had not met the target.

“Hopefully, this forum could formulate an empowerment strategy so that women can be prioritized and become the development actors to realize the fifth point of SDGs,” he said.

Ending discrimination against women

In the webinar, Dr Jennifer Operio MBA from the Holy Angel University Philippines was featured as one of the guest speakers. She explained that some patriarchal cultures that discriminate against women in society are also embedded in the Philippines, just like in Indonesia.

It causes the low involvement of women, particularly in economic activity. “As a result, a lot of families were plunged into poverty,” she said.

Therefore, education to change the mindset and empowerment activities in the form of training to develop skills are highly required. Dr Jennifer said that the institutional approach-based is one of the most effective empowerment strategies. She gave an example of women empowerment in Mindanao, Philippines.

“There is a community development institution that designs a development project for the farmers’ wives in Mindanao. The project received funding from the World Bank, which increases their revenue and infrastructure, and significantly improves their welfare,” she said.

Apart from Dr Jennifer, the forum was also attended by other guest speakers, Dwi Yuliawati Faiz from UN Women (United Nation Entity for Gender Equality and Women Empowerment) Indonesia, Dr Tri Siwi Agustina, and Shochrul Rohmatul Ajija MEc from FEB. (*)

Blue energy and blue economy: A virtual program held by ITS in collaboration with Heriot-Watt University and Aquatera

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) Surabaya, in collaboration with Heriot-Watt University (HWU), United Kingdom, held a virtual program titled “Blue Energy and Blue Economy.” The program ran from June 20 to 30, 2022. The collaboration was initiated in 2021 and sponsored by the Going Global Partnership, British Council. The program focused on the implementation of alternative energy and sustainable economic empowerment for communities in coastal areas. This year, Aquatera, a leading renewable energy–based company in the UK, joined the collaboration to share its reputable experience.

The opening remarks were delivered by Opened on Monday (20/06/2022), and the virtual program was attended by the ITS Surabaya team, HWU team, and representatives from Aquatera Ltd. The program was opened directly by Dr. Eng. Trika Pitana, S.T., M.Sc, the Dean of the Faculty of Marine Technology, ITS Surabaya, and by Dr. Joanne Porter, Deputy Director at the International Center for Island Technology, HWU. In his speech, Dr. Trika Pitana emphasized the objectives and the overall series of activities in this program. “In this program we have professors and professionals who have a lot of experience in implementing blue energy, and I believe participants can take a lot of lessons and experiences to learn from the case studies conducted in Orkney, Scotland, and Indonesia,” explained Dr. Joanne Porter in supporting Dr. Trika’s remarks.

The virtual program involved more than 70 participants and was composed of 41 students from ITS Surabaya, 7 from HWU, and the rest from various universities in Indonesia. The participants are expected to have a comprehensive understanding of important aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG number 7 (affordable and clean energy), SDG 13 (climate action), and SDG 14 (life below water). As a follow-up program, the second stage of this program consists of a field observation visit, which will be conducted in August in Larantuka, East Flores, East Nusa Tenggara. Through this activity, it is hoped that the team and program participants will get direct experience from the community and local stakeholders, so that they can identify problems in the field and develop a roadmap for the implementation of blue energy and the blue economy in Indonesia.

ITS wins ahead of the world’s best universities in International Roboboat Competition 2022

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) has once again proved its reputation as the world’s leading university in technology by earning the Grand Champion title in the International Roboboat Competition (IRC) 2022 held in Florida, United States, this June. The ITS team, Barunastra, ranked first in two categories, namely, Design & Documentation and Autonomy Challenge, finishing ahead of the world’s best universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan.

Since 2012, Barunastra has focused on developing unmanned vessels. Barunastra has been designing and producing Autonomous Surface Vehicles, as well as Fuel Engine Remote Control and Remote Control boats. Established by ITS Robotics, Metic Club from Marine Engineering, and Hydromodelling Club from Naval Architecture, Barunastra has a solid commitment to fostering global maritime technology advancement. Therefore, Barunastra has actively participated in various competitions, winning back-to-back championships in 2018 and 2019 in IRC, in which it has participated since 2016.

Barunastra proudly presented an autonomous boat called Nala Theseus in this year’s competition. Nala Theseus has been developed with a modularity concept so that it could accommodate a large amount of cargo on board. In addition, Nala Theseus has been designed with a watertight hull that prevents damage to its electrical components. Barunastra’s achievement has not only become a source of ITS pride, but also a national treasure. Fatahillah Muhammad Daffa Shodiq, one of the team members, hopes that this accomplishment will inspire the development of autonomous boats in Indonesia, one of the world’s foremost maritime countries.

ITS chosen as implementing partner for WiSCi Camp: Southeast Asia 2022

Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) was chosen to be an implementing partner for ten (10) female senior high school students of the residential-based Science Camp (WiSci): Southeast Asia, a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) Camp for teen girls allowing access to education, mentorship, and leadership training. The virtual camp is taking place from July 4 to 9, 2022.

WiSci Camps is a public–private partnership by the US Department of State, the United Nations Foundation’s campaign Girl Up, and Intel. Since 2015, camps have been hosted in Africa, Europe, the Caucasus, the Balkans, and the Middle East. WiSci Southeast Asia will be the very first hybrid camp experience. This year, ITS American Corner becomes the home of ten (10) campers and two (2) counselors from the Surabaya area.

Seventy (70) campers and thirteen (13) counselors from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia participate in WiSci Camp 2022. During the camp, campers will learn leadership skills with their counselors, learn about STEAM topics via sessions with private-sector partners, and conduct a project preparation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and SDGs with their cohorts. Campers will also become acquainted with prominent female scientists though a women’s panel discussion, including with representatives from the US embassies in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, and Intel trainers.

How RSTKA’s floating hospital ship made an effort in reducing pollution emitted from its voyage

Ksatria Airlangga Floating Hospital (RSTKA), which is three meters tall and 27 meters long, has a similar shape as ships in general. However, on the roof of this ship, eight pieces of solar panels are installed as a power source. RSTKA seeks to sail more environmentally friendly. Ship engines, which previously used fuel oil (BBM), are now hybrid by utilizing alternative energy.

“Since October 2021, RSTKA ships have been using solar panels. The cost of fuel can be reduced by using these solar panels,” said Mudatsir, captain of the RSTKA ship.

Mudatsir mentioned that the use of 1,500 liters of diesel fuel, which usually costs 15 million per month, can be decreased to as much as 500 liters at the cost of 10 million per month. “We’re glad because with these solar panels, it can be cost-effective,” he said.

“Solar heat from solar panels accommodates power in the battery, then it is directly connected to the electrical needs on the ship, especially for this RSTKA ship, there is medical equipment that must always be sterile and need electrical energy,” explained Mudatsir.

He added that the capacity of the solar panels themselves reaches 1800 watts. Although the source of electricity from the RSTKA ship is still hybrid, Mudatsir feels that the use of solar panels can reduce dependence on diesel fuel.

Independent waste management

In addition to using solar panels as a more environmentally friendly sailing effort, Mudatsir also shared how RSTKA manages the waste produced.

“On the way to East Nusa Tenggara, we started sorting waste based on organic and inorganic types, the organic waste is processed into oil or fuel,” he said. Meanwhile, inorganic waste is handed over to communities on the mainland for further recycling.

Waste pollution can be minimized by sorting and utilizing organic and inorganic waste. Until now, RSTKA ships continue to reduce the use of oil fuel and implement waste management. It is done so that the humanitarian sailing to provide healthcare services carried out does not cause more pollution. RSTKA always supports the implementation of environmentally friendly activities. UNAIR collaborates with Tunku Abdul Rahman University College Malaysia

Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) received a visit from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC), Malaysia, at the Plenary Meeting Room, Management Office 4th Floor, MERR C Campus on Monday, May 30, 2022. The visit was held to discuss the education and university governance in Indonesia and opportunities for collaboration between UNAIR and TAR UC.

In his remarks, Vice-Rector for Academic, Students, and Alumni Affairs, Prof Dr Bambang Sektiari Lukiswanto expressed his joy for TAR UC’s visit to UNAIR. Prof. Bambang is looking forward to collaborating with TAR UC, not only at the university level but also national level.

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Low Tiong Lai, as Chairman of the Board of Governors of TARC UC, also expressed his respect for UNAIR’s invitation to the semi-government university. He is also looking forward to TAR UC’s collaboration with UNAIR.

“I hope that our brotherhood in Asia can be the excellence of Asia. I look forward to our collaboration in conferences, research, student exchanges, and even lecture exchanges, ” he said.

Collaboration in various fields

The receding wave of Covid-19 makes UNAIR optimistic that it can carry out international activities offline together with TAR UC. Head of Internationalization AGE UNAIR, Dina Septiani PhD said that UNAIR is ready to send and receive students and lecturers with TAR UC. She also explained that UNAIR gladly accepted the double degree offer from TAR UC.

“We are currently discussing the double degree opportunity with several universities in Indonesia. We welcome UNAIR to collaborate in a double degree program,” said Associate Professor Say Sok Kwan as the representative of TAR UC.

He also expressed his interest in holding an international conference with UNAIR. Say Sok Kwan admitted that he was looking forward to the interaction between students from both universities.

“We hope to continue the discussion regarding the physical international conference (offline international conference, ed), which may be held in 2023. If UNAIR organizes it, we are ready to be a co-host,” he said.

Furthermore, Secretary of UNAIR Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM) Niko Azhari Hidayat dr SpBTKV also proposed collaboration in the field of entrepreneurship. According to him, UNAIR business incubators can cooperate with business incubators from TAR UC to a degree of bilateral pitching.
