    Measuring excellence in Russia: Highly cited papers, leading institutions, patterns of national and international collaboration

    This study revealed that highly cited papers serve as an illustration for quality and co-authored papers as part of collaborative efforts. However, commercial sector has been found to have insignificant input of high-impact research. In addition, despite having a significant number of Russian highly cited papers, they mostly involve international collaboration with minimal contribution from Russian institutions. Partnerships with the United States, Germany, United Kingdom and French scientists significantly enhance the plausibility of a Russian paper becoming prominently cited. Patterns of national (“intranational”) collaboration in world-class research vary considerably depending on the types of organisations.
