UiTM Perak Branch Takes CSR Initiative to Fight PPE Shortage Amid COVID-19 Outbreak

Universiti Teknologi MARA, (UiTM) Perak Branch, Seri Iskandar Campus is amplifying its Corporate Social Responsibility by taking initiative to ease the shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) faced by the nation’s frontliners.

Dr Zainudin Md Nor, a senior lecturer at the Fashion Department, Faculty of Art and Design (FSSR), UiTM led the team comprising fashion lecturers, lecturers from the Academy of Language Studies (APB) and Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying (FSPU); staff, students, tailors and housewives to produce various types of PPE such as isolation gowns, head covers, disposable hijabs, disposable shoe covers and face shields. The materials to make these items came from various sources namely a major general hospital, (Sungai Buluh Hospital), UiTM alumni, Malaysian Red Crescent (Perak), state assembly men and individuals.

The completed items were sent to various health centers and hospitals in the state as requested by the sponsors namely Changkat Melintang Hospital, Health Centres in Central Perak, Manjung Hospital, Health Unit of UiTM Perak Branch and Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB). A total of 2,040 pairs of shoe covers, 740 sets of isolation gowns, 100 units of disposable headwear, as well as 800 units of face shields were produced by the team and were handed over to the various health centers on 5th May 2020.

The Rector of UiTM Perak Branch, Professor Sr Dr. Md Yusof Hamid, highlighted that “the management of UiTM Perak Branch have been committed and supportive towards the initiative and hopes the contribution will help to cater to the frontliners’ needs.

Dr Zainudin Md Nor’s concern and sympathy towards the current shortage situation of PPE among frontliners and the immediate need for the PPE was felt when it was highlighted on the social media. The frontliners’ plight motivated him to organize the project in UiTM Perak Branch. “I was so taken aback and felt very sad to see the frontliners using plastic bags which were modified as PPE. Since I have the time, skills and expertise in producing the PPE, I decided to do something to help them and at the same time support the government in facing this ordeal,” he said to a question on what made him decide to help in producing the PPE. “I will continue this good collaboration with them even after the Movement Control Order (MCO) period has ended”, he added.

This act of selflessness shows that the spirit of togetherness, kindness and unity still exists in the hearts of many Malaysians and it has succeeded in producing Malaysian citizens who are willing to sacrifice for their beloved country.
