LFW: M.C.Overalls launch grass roots collaboration with London College of Contemporary Arts

M.C.Overalls and London College of Contemporary Arts have united to create an immersive collaboration, giving the students the opportunity for insight and exposure into the workings, design and marketing of the UK’s oldest workwear brand. A customised collection of polycotton snap shirts that uniquely combines workwear and storytelling, championing the values of design, inclusivity, community and diversity.

Students from BA Fashion design and marketing designed five unique polycotton snap shirts along with marketing and social media campaigns in tandem. All products have been either individually painted or re-worked using recycled or sustainable fabrics.

All the bespoke works will be on display at the M.C.Overalls Store at 21 Brewer Street, Soho on 20 February, for one evening only during London Fashion Week. Selected students will also have the opportunity to contribute designs to M.C.Overalls’ future collections.

M.C.Overalls now plan to collaborate with LCCA on an annual basis helping to nurture other young creatives, providing an ongoing and live forum for fashion design, retail and marketing exposure to help develop the grassroots fashion industry.

“We are thrilled that BA Fashion, BA Fashion Management and Marketing students at LCCA collaborated on a design sprint with British heritage brand, M.C.Overalls,” said Sadie Clayton, BA Fashion Course Director. “This project will shape our students’ perceptions of the industry and what it means to be a sustainable and ethical designer. We’re excited to partner with a brand eager to celebrate and nurture the skills of grassroots designers by not only providing them with opportunities to gain practical industry experience and showcase their redrafted pieces in-store, but also focusing on themselves, their pathways into the industry and what drives their creative decisions.”

LCCM hosts the inaugural Mathew Knowles Scholarship Competition

London College of Creative Media (LCCM) recently hosted the inaugural, grand final of the Mathew Knowles Scholarship competition. Taking place in front of a sold-out audience at the college’s iconic Music Box venue, five students battled it out to win the enticing prize of free tuition for up to three years of studying. The competition is named after Dr Mathew Knowles, the GRAMMY-Award winning US music executive. Knowles is also known as the mastermind behind the success of Destiny’s Child and his daughters Beyoncé and Solange and he is a visiting lecturer at LCCM. After a show of talented performances and a tight competition, the Mathew Knowles Scholarship was awarded to the postgraduate producer Felix Clarke. “Winning the Scholarship was a huge honour, a bit beyond comprehension. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to study something I’ve dreamt of my entire life.” On receiving the scholarship from Mathew Knowles, he quipped: “It’s crazy. Destiny’s Child was one of the first CDs I ever bought. It’s come full circle!”

The finalists, India Shinton (producer and performer), Angel Seka (producer and performer), Jevon Langridge (drummer), Opeyemi Martins (music business) and Felix Clarke were judged by a top-tier panel of music experts, Columbia Record A&R Lashawna Stewart and songwriter for PINK, Michael Kay, as well as Dr Mathew Knowles. Commenting on the scholarship and the grand final, host and LCCM creative industries liaison JD Donovan said: “The Mathew Knowles scholarship was a fantastic year-long initiative, with more than 100 young musicians and applicants putting themselves forward. We showcased some incredible talents and provided an incredible final night of entertainment and positivity. How the judges narrowed it down to two finalists, Felix and India, I just don’t know.”

Elsewhere at LCCM in October, the college hosted its first graduation ceremony since the pandemic. Hosted at Hilton London Bankside’s beautiful “Bankside Ballroom,” with more than 100 students and 300 guests, the ceremony was led by LCCM’s Programme Administration Manager and Master of Ceremonies Andres Castellanos followed by Principal Anthony Hamer-Hodges. Dr Mathew Knowles also took to the lectern, delivering the Honorary Valedictory speech, having earlier hand-signed a motivational letter for every graduate.

LCCM graduates include BRIT Award winner Tom Walker, and fellow artists and writers Rhys Lewis and Chiara Hunter. Other former students making waves include Marie Dahlstrom, JOY (ANONYMOUS), Sans Soucis (just signed to Decca Records) and Nathan Challinor, the latter for his co-writes with BBC Sound of 2022 finalist Baby Queen. LCCM’s custom-built teaching and artist development facility The Music Box in Central London features a 120-cap entertainment venue and multiple recording studios. Major artists including Kojey Radical, Moses Boyd, Amber Run, Novelist and Kara Marni have spent time rehearsing or recording from The Music Box in recent months, as well as meeting with LCCM students.

After successfully launching last year, the night will return every Monday during term time between 6-8PM at the college’s Music Box venue near London’s Southbank, with the addition of an open mic performance hour after the weekly topic-based discussion.

Partnering with industry trade body UK Music, LCCM kickstarted the free-to-attend Music Industry Mondays series in September 2021, determined to help the London music community bounce back from the disruptions of the pandemic. Each Monday at 6PM the college will open up its 120-capacity venue, with a fully licensed bar for an evening of music industry discussion and networking.

For those who can’t attend on the day, the talks are filmed and edited into full-length episodes to watch back via LCCM’s student cloud portal and UK Music’s MAP network of other higher education providers. Previous guests have included Nadia Khan, Good Soldier Records, The Music Federation, Mute Song, artist Carmody and platinum-selling songwriter Rob Davis.

This year, the programming has expanded to include multiple industry sectors, giving attendees a bird’s eye view of the modern music economy, as well as an open mic performance opportunity. Get ready to mark those diaries – the confirmed line up is as follows:

The first of the Music Industry Mondays will be on September 26 with Jo Howarth, artist manager at Attention Management.

Over the next weeks up until December 12, there will be a range of guests including Mark Murdoch, Mahogany Records & Sessions; Nick Oakes, Sony Music Publishing; Gemma Farrington, Sentric Music; Melanie Shark, Utopia; and Graham Davies from Ivors Academy.

“We host these weekly discussions to give young musicians, students and anyone who is passionate about music, real insights from top executives, artists, songwriters and decision makers,” says LCCM Principal Anthony Hamer-Hodges. “It’s always a lively discussion with questions from the audience and a chance to network at the bar afterwards. Once we are done talking about music, obviously nothing beats actually listening to talented singers showcasing their talent. The addition of the live open mic element will give anyone in attendance a chance to wow their peers and our industry guests.”

The latest line-up of industry guests and organisations is another sign of LCCM’s position at the crossroads of talent development and higher education, while the college’s new visiting lecturer, legendary music executive Mathew Knowles arrives for his first sessions with students at the end of the September.

LCCM and Living Bankside celebrates community on eve of local elections

London’s higher education music college LCCM, and community organisation Living Bankside, recently hosted a joint event at the Music Box, the college’s entertainment venue in SE1.

The London Academy of Trading (LAT), the UK’s first accredited trading academy, has recently won two prestigious awards: the “Most Outstanding Trading Courses Provider 2022 – UK” at the AI – 2022 Global Excellence Awards and the “Trading Academy of the Year 2022” at the Prestige Awards. The latter is the third year in a row that LAT has won this accolade.

The judges were impressed by LAT’s ongoing mission to ensure its provision is among the very best in the world. LAT is continually expanding its portfolio, offering practical and vocational training courses, developed to help individuals looking to earn an additional income from trading financial markets, or those looking to further their career within the sector.

Paddy Osborn, Managing Director and Academic Dean of LAT, said: “We don’t work just to get awards, but it’s very satisfying to be recognised by two different institutions for these prestigious awards.

LAT is extremely flexible to enable students to study around other commitments, offering monthly intakes, options to study online, on campus or a blend of both, while also offering options to upgrade from one course to another by simply paying the difference between the two.

Elsewhere, last month LAT offered 30% scholarships to women for the fourth year running with its Women in Trading Scholarship and has recently established a long-term partnership with ShareVision, a dynamic streaming platform for traders, economists and global finance.

Ed Vaizey, Natalie Shay and PRS among first guests for LCCM series

Higher education music college LCCM has announced a number of high-profile guests for its weekly Music Industry Mondays talk and networking series.

On Monday 24th January, the Central London college will welcome Ed Vaizey. The former UK government minister for Culture and Digital Economy, now Baron Vaizey of Didcot, will be sharing his views on the music industry. Lord Vaizey, often mentioned in the media as a potential new chair of UK media regulator Ofcom, is widely viewed as a popular advocate of the music and creative industries. Writing passionately in The Times, Vaizey pointed out that the music industry “is not an industry defined only by the big-name artists and labels we all know. It is a rich, deep and highly competitive ecosystem that must be better understood.”

Fast-rising independent singer-songwriter Natalie Shay will join LCCM on 7th February for a special Q&A and live performance involving college students. Natalie has established an ever-growing presence and loyal fanbase through her explosive live performances and unforgettable anthems – selling out Camden Assembly on release of her last single. Her collaborations with major trance artists Kryder (Black Hole Recordings) and Grum (Anjunabeats) have racked up over 4 million streams.

Partnering with industry trade body UK Music, LCCM kick started the free-to-attend Music Industry Mondays series in September 2021, determined to bounce back from the disruptions of the last two academic years. Each Monday during term time at 6PM, the college opens its 120-capacity Music Box venue and fully licensed bar for an evening of music industry discussion and networking. For those who can’t attend on the day, the talks are filmed and edited into full-length episodes to watch back via LCCM’s student cloud portal and UK Music’s MAP network of other higher education providers. Previous guests have included Nadia Khan, Good Soldier Records, The Music Federation, Mute Song, singer-songwriter Carmody and PPL.

The first talk of the new year was from David Martin, CEO at Featured Artist Coalition, followed in the second week of term by Claire Rose, Outreach Manager at PRS for Music, who discussed the PRS Foundation and funding programmes available for artists and musicians. A highly relevant conversation, given unsettling times for live music and the rise in artists choosing to forgo a record deal and release music independently.

LCCM Principal and host of Music Industry Mondays, Anthony Hamer-Hodges says: “We host these weekly discussions to give our students and anyone else who is passionate about making a living in the modern music industry, real insights from top executives, artists, songwriters and decision makers. It’s always a lively discussion with questions from the audience and a chance to network at the bar afterwards. It certainly makes a nice change from all the Zoom lessons during lockdown. We are determined to give our students and the wider London music community the full benefit of the Music Box, our creative and educational hub in the heart of cultural SE1.”

The latest high-profile guests are another indication of LCCM’s position at the crossroads of talent development and higher education. LCCM graduates include BRIT Award winner Tom Walker, and fellow artists and writers Rhys Lewis and Chiara Hunter. Other former students making waves include Marie Dahlstrom, JOY (ANONYMOUS), Sans Soucis and Nathan Challinor, known for his co-writes with BBC Sound of 2022 finalist Baby Queen.

LCCM’s custom-built teaching and artist development facility the Music Box in Central London features a 120-cap entertainment venue and multiple recording studios. Major artists including Kojey Radical, Moses Boyd, Amber Run, Novelist and Kara Marni have spent time rehearsing or recording at the Music Box in recent months, as well as meeting with LCCM students.
