Carbon-X and SISEE Bring Research to Schools

BANTING, MALAYSIA (24 JUNE 2026) – Research plays an important role in addressing global challenges, but its impact is amplified when knowledge is shared with future generations. Demonstrating this commitment, Carbon Advanced Materials for Energy and Decarbonization (Carbon-X) and Subsurface Intelligent System and Energy Engineering (SISEE), two research entities under the Department of Oil and Gas Engineering, Faculty of Chemical Engineering (FKK), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), participated in Program SULAM STEAMFIT 2026 at Sekolah Kebangsaan Olak Lempit, Banting, Selangor.

Sharing a dedicated exhibition booth, both research entities translated advanced engineering research into engaging and interactive STEM experiences, introducing primary school students to the exciting world of energy, sustainability, and engineering innovation.

Transforming Research into Engaging Learning Experiences

The exhibition guided students through a series of interactive demonstrations designed to stimulate curiosity and scientific exploration. Rather than presenting complex engineering concepts through conventional explanations, the exhibition adopted a hands-on approach that encouraged students to explore, ask questions, and discover how engineering research contributes to solving real-world challenges.

Showcasing Energy and Sustainability Research

The joint exhibition highlighted the complementary research strengths of Carbon-X and SISEE.

As a research entity focusing on advanced carbon materials for energy and decarbonization, Carbon-X introduced students to sustainable engineering solutions, carbon reduction technologies, and the role of innovative materials in supporting a low carbon future.

Meanwhile, SISEE demonstrated the importance of subsurface intelligence and energy engineering, introducing concepts related to underground energy resources, reservoir characterisation, and engineering technologies that support responsible energy development.

Together, the two research entities demonstrated how multidisciplinary engineering research contributes to energy security, environmental sustainability, and technological innovation.

Extending Research Beyond the Laboratory

The participation of Carbon-X and SISEE in SULAM STEAMFIT 2026 reflects FKK UiTM's continued commitment to extending research impact through meaningful community engagement. By bringing university research into schools, the initiative strengthened STEM awareness among young learners while illustrating the important role of engineering research in addressing societal and environmental challenges.

The programme also provided an opportunity for researchers to inspire future generations by demonstrating that innovation begins with curiosity and that today's students have the potential to become tomorrow's scientists, engineers, and innovators.

Sincere appreciation is extended to the management and teachers of SK Olak Lempit, the programme organisers, student volunteers, and all participants for contributing to the success of this meaningful STEM outreach initiative.
