    UiTM, Civil Engineering lecturer represented Malaysia at the United Nations workshop on green city planning urban development

    United Nations(UN), an international organization founded in 1945 currently constitutes 193 countries including Malaysia. Being a UN organization, it has various policies and programs aimed at issues confronting humanity in the 21st century, such as peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, human rights, disarmament, terrorism, humanitarian and health emergencies, gender equality, governance, food production and more. All these constitute the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

    Recently, United Nations in its aim to provide education and awareness programs to government officials, private sector and civil society set up the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). UNITAR together with CIFAL Global Network organised a United Nations Workshop on the Green City Planning Urban Development at Jeju Island, South of Korea from 8th to 11th May, 2019. A qualified representative was selected from each country around the world to attend their program.

    UiTM was very proud that Dr. Amnorzahira Amir, a senior lecturer from the Faculty of Civil Engineering, UiTM, Malaysia and who speacialises in ‘remediation of contaminants in the environment’ was selected to represent Malaysia at the United Nations Workshop on the Green City Planning Urban.

    The workshop was organized with the objective to enhance the knowledge of the participants from the Asia-Pacific region on the concept of green city, the appropriate policy planning and the current situation, trends, and technologies such as smart cities. 20 representatives from 15 countries participated in this workshop. The participants were from Malaysia, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh and other Southeast Asian countries Dr. Amnorzahira presented her proposal on UiTM as a Green Campus and Development of Green Water System in Shah Alam City. Currently, her focus is on promoting water recycle program in UiTM, Shah Alam and Integrated Lake Management System at the Shah Alam City Council.

    The output of this workshop is really significant to facilitate UiTM’s move towards becoming a Sustainability University and eventually to be ranked in IU GreenMetric World University Rankings 2019.
