The Association of Finance (TAF), one of the active students’ society at Faculty of Business and Management, Universiti Teknologi MARA recently organised a “Taiwan Financial Literacy Tour”. One of the major aims of the society is for the students to gain international academic experience. The Taiwan Financial Literacy Tour was a major initiative by TAF and was successfully organized by 14 dedicated students of the Bachelor of Business Administration (Finance) and the advisor of the program Dr. Norliza Che Yahya from the Department of Economics and Finance Studies.

This visit program was successfully held from 1st September 2019 to 7th September 2019 and centred around renowned universities in the city of Taipei, Taiwan. The specific objectives of this visit program was knowledge enhancement, particularly in the global mind-set focussing on the financial and banking system. Besides, students and academics also wanted some exposure to the approaches in teaching and learning at the Taiwanese universities, which are recognized as prestigious higher educational institutions in Asia.

Two of Taiwan’s top universities namely National Taiwan University and National Chiao Tung University were visited. Professor Alex Y. Huang, the Director of International Affairs at the National Chiao Tung University gave a briefing on the academic programs in the College of Management.

Next, came a more interesting session – a visit to Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation. The Finance students were overwhelmed and felt a privilege to witness real physical stocks certificates of Taiwanese public listed companies being traded. A bigger experience was a session by the Corporate Strategy and Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Pao Hsien Kao who gave the staff and students an opportunity to experience the stocks’ trading exercise from the corporation’s simulation monitor.

Finally, was an inspiring visit to the Taiwan Halal Integrity Development Association (THIDA), registered as a Halal certification body in Taiwan. At THIDA, the students were briefed on how THIDA adheres to the Shariah Law  in inspecting products and companies prior to the issuance of Halal certification. The Vice President of the association, Mr. Salahuding Ma Chao-Yen spoke on the process of how halal certification is done in spite of many challenges faced by the association.

The students claimed that “Taiwan Financial Literacy Tour was one of TAF’s most significant academic program which has given us valuable knowledge and experience with different educational exposure which cannot be taught in a classroom”.
