The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has achieved a milestone in its research journey, with 73 scholars named in the World’s Top 2% Scientists 2026 ranking compiled by Stanford University. This represents an increase of more than 30% compared to the previous year and marks the highest number of EdUHK scholars ever included in the prestigious global list. Notably, 41 of the 73 scholars were ranked within the world’s top 1% in their respective fields.
The annual ranking, based on Scopus citation data and developed by researchers at Stanford University, evaluates academic influence through a range of indicators, including citation impact, co-authorship adjustments and author ranking metrics. The list is widely regarded as a benchmark of research excellence and scholarly impact.
What makes this achievement particularly significant is the breadth of disciplines represented. The recognised scholars span 21 subject areas, demonstrating the University’s expanding research profile and growing interdisciplinary strengths. While education remains a core area of excellence, accounting for 37 of the recognised scholars, other fields represented include artificial intelligence and image processing, environmental sciences, languages and linguistics, music, forestry, rehabilitation sciences, geriatrics, neurology, mathematics and statistics, and social psychology.
The recognition highlights EdUHK’s successful transformation from a teacher education institution into a comprehensive university with global research impact. Over the past decade, the University has invested strategically in talent recruitment, interdisciplinary research and international collaboration, strengthening its capacity to address educational and societal challenges through innovative scholarship.
Reflecting on the achievement, Professor John Lee Chi-Kin, President of EdUHK, noted that the recognition coincides with a meaningful milestone as the University celebrates the 10th anniversary of its retitling. He emphasised that the growing international recognition of both the University and its scholars reflects years of dedication to talent development, academic excellence and research impact. He also highlighted the important contributions of world-class researchers in inspiring new research directions, enriching student learning opportunities and strengthening Hong Kong’s position as an international education hub.
The University’s research momentum has been further strengthened by the arrival of 15 distinguished professors from leading institutions across Europe and Asia at the beginning of the 2026/27 academic year. Covering areas such as education, social sciences, health and sport sciences, technology, psychology and interdisciplinary studies, these appointments are expected to enhance global collaboration and support the University’s strategic ambitions under its Strategic Plan 2025–2031.
As higher education institutions worldwide seek to generate greater societal impact through research, the latest results demonstrate how focused investment in academic talent and interdisciplinary scholarship can translate into international recognition. For EdUHK, the record number of scholars recognised among the world’s leading scientists not only affirms its research excellence but also signals its growing contribution to knowledge creation, innovation and sustainable development on the global stage.
