Congratulations to Iman Jazmina Mohd Jamel, a student of UiTMLaw for being selected as a participant of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Academic Fellowship: Civic Engagement from 14 March to 18 April 2020 at University of Nebraska Omaha, USA. Participants of this programme are selected based on merit and skype interview. Iman Jazmina has been actively participating in women’s empowerment movements and was recently appointed as Girl2Leader Malaysia Ambassador.
YSEALI Academic Fellowship is fully funded programme by the US Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It is a public diplomacy programme designed to advance regional strategic goals, break down barriers that separate the next generation of leaders in Southeast Asia, and link those emerging leaders to the United States. To this end, the YSEALI Fellowship will bring exceptional young leaders from Southeast Asian countries to the United States to further develop their professional and leadership skills. In spring of 2020, the Fellowship will bring approximately 125 young leaders, aged between 18-25, from eleven Southeast Asian countries to the US for a five-week programme at pre-eminent US universities and colleges. The programme will conclude in Washington DC for networking with policy makers, government representatives, businesses and think tanks.
The YSEALI Academic Fellowship is an intensive short-term programme aims to provide groups of young leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States, and a particular theme, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills. The Fellowship will focus on one of three themes: Civic Engagement, Environmental Issues and Natural Resource Management, and Social Entrepreneurship and Economic Development. The programme consists of a series of seminar discussions, readings, group presentations and lectures. The coursework and classroom activities will be complemented by educational travel, site visits, leadership activities and volunteer opportunities within the local community. It will include an academic residency component of approximately four weeks and a domestic study tour of approximately one week. During the academic residency, participants will have the opportunity to engage in educational and cultural activities outside the classroom.
