UiTMLaw goes global through MoU with Herbert Smith Freehills

On 12 July 2019, the Faculty of Law (UiTMLaw), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) organised a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony between the UiTM and Herbert Smith Freehills, a leading global law firm with 27 offices internationally, including in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The purpose of the MoU is to enhance the industry’s network of mutual relations between the UiTMLaw and Herbert Smith Freehills in order to give the students of the UiTMLaw exposure in international and cross-border legal practice.

Among the agreed scope of collaboration, the MoU will provide opportunities, facilities and most importantly industrial exposure to the students of the UiTMLaw via the provision of guest lectures and internship opportunities focusing on international legal transactions.

Herbert Smith Freehills was formed as a result of a 2012 merger between Herbert Smith, a prominent international law firm headquartered in London, and Freehills, one of the largest law firms in Australia. Since the merger, Herbert Smith Freehills has continued its rapid international expansion with a keen emphasis on Asia. With its outstanding track record of catering for client needs in international law and legal services, Herbert Smith Freehills currently operates 27 offices across the globe, spanning South Africa, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Asia and Australia.  This is indeed an important opportunity for the UiTMLaw to learn and gain exposure internationally and globally from this global law firm.

In line with the “UiTMLaw goes Global” aspiration, this collaboration is a leading part of the internationalization endeavour carried out by the UiTMLaw. Herbert Smith Freehills has already provided, and will continue to provide, several guest lectures, covering both technical legal issues and soft skills, at the faculty in 2018 and 2019. Additionally, Herbert Smith Freehills has entered into an informal arrangement to offer at least one internship position to students from the faculty as part of the firm’s annual internship programme.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by the Dean of UiTMLaw, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hartini Saripan and Ms. Roobalavaniah Rengasamy from the Malaysian Bar Council – with the MoU signed by the Vice Chancellor of UiTM, Professor Emeritus Ir. Dr. Mohd Azraai Kassim and the Asia Head of Dispute Resolution and Managing Partner of Herbert Smith Freehills’ Kuala Lumpur office, Mr. Peter Godwin.
