The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia Student Chapter was recently awarded the Student Chapter Excellence Award for their exemplary efforts in achieving their goal as a student organization, in line with SPE’s mission of industry engagement and social outreach. It was the organization’s first time to receive such a prestigious award since its establishment in 2013 in UiTM.
The award, an international award which is SPE’s second-highest award that a student chapter can receive, is awarded annually to only 20 percent of eligible student chapters worldwide.
Zharif Zhainulazfar Mohd Asri, the SPE President said, “The award means so much to us after our hard work in preparing for two international events.
The two major international events organized by the student organization are the Energy and Environment Competition (EEC) and SPE Student Chapter Malaysia Oil & Gas Convention. (SMOGC). SMOGC was hosted by UiTM, in collaboration with five other student chapters namely Universiti Malaya, Heriot-Watt University, UCSI University, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, and Universiti Teknologi Petronas.
“We would not have been able to receive this prestigious award without the support and guidance from our lecturers. A special thanks to our Advisor, Dr Nor Roslina Rosli; the Head of Studies Centre for Oil and Gas, Ir Ts Dr Nur Hidayati Othman, and Student Society Coordinator Mr Tengku Amran for all their guidance in training us to become future leaders,” said Abdul Halim Asmungi, SPE Vice President.
Muhammad Afif Ahmad Murad, SPE secretary said “We actively organize at least one activity a month, and all the help, knowledge and trust that has been given by SPE Kuala Lumpur and all companies involved is greatly appreciated”.
“The award is a great motivation for us to work even harder next year to achieve the Presidential Award, which is the highest recognition, annually awarded at a technical convention in the United States of America,” expressed Afrina Abdullah, SPE treasurer.
