The role of translational research in addressing health disparities: a conceptual framework

Translational research is inherent as a mean to scale down health disparities in the United States. However, a lack of mutual understanding about the purview of this dynamic, multidisciplinary approach to research has limited its application. The term “translational research” is often identified with the phrase “bench to bedside”. However, the facilitation of biomedical advances from the laboratory to clinical trials is only the first chapter of the translational development.

The second juncture of translation, wherein innovations are shifted to real-world practice, is of equal significance, but it received limited attention. As a result, large amount of money and effort are spent in widening the boundaries of understanding and examining the molecular underpinnings of diseases and illnesses, while lesser resources are put in place to enhance the mechanisms where those advances will be utilised to advance health results. To develop awareness of the complete translational process  and understanding of its value, two complementary models have been designed. They yield an integrated conceptual framework for translational research. Particularly, these models include various factors of the National Institutes of Health guideline for the future of medical research and contribute a pronounced conceptualization of how an extensive research endeavors from various disciplines can be used collectively to advance towards the attainment of two ambient objectives of Healthy People 2010.
