The Power of Mindsets: Nurturing Engagement, Motivation and Resilience in Students

Three interrelated notions – student engagement, motivation and resilience – are examined in the frame of “mindsets”. Mindsets are inferences that we acquire about ourselves and others that guide our behaviour. Educators’ mindset about the aspects that contribute to student engagement, motivation and resilience determines their expectations, teaching practices and relationships with students. In this paper, the fundamental elements of these three notions are determined, drawing attention to those that fold over.

Further, this paper also characterises the differences between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation and the methods in which the latter is more closely attuned with student engagement and resilience than the former. Continuing discussions of mindsets at staff meetings are also encourages so that educators become increasingly aware of the mindset of engaged, motivated learners and are able to determine how to develop this mindset in the classroom. Various strategies are also proposed to ease the enrichment of this mindset in learners.
