    Taipei Medical University Healthcare System creates smart health caregiving sphere

    • Three milestone projects expand TMU Healthcare System

    TMU Shuang Ho Campus (aka Shuang Ho(雙和) Biotech Park)

    The ground-breaking ceremony for TMU’s Shuang Ho Campus was held on May 3, 2019. The TMU Shuang Ho Campus is expected to be completed and opened in 2022, and will significantly enhance the overall standards of medical technology and research potential for the TMU Healthcare System. The Shuang Ho Campus will host an industry collaboration R&D center and nurture TMU biomedical startup accelerators to combine TMU’s biotechnology research and Shuang Ho Hospital’s medical resources and clinical trial services. These multidisciplinary initiatives will attract innovative global talent while nurturing local professionals and accelerating industrial development. This campus will link up with the planned Zhonghe Biomedical Science Park to form a biotechnical and medical startup ecosphere. Eventually, plans call for links with the Research Biotechnology Park and Hsinchu Biomedical Science Park to create Taiwan’s biomedical corridor, increasing local industry’s competitive edge on the global stage.

    Taipei Cancer Center & Proton Therapy Center

    Next year will mark the conclusion of work on the Taipei Cancer Center and Proton Therapy Center that started in 2018. These centers will provide the TMU system with more medical and research space, including outpatient and chemotherapy care and services, a translational medicine research center, and facilities for early clinical trials and advanced proton therapy. TMU Healthcare System’s cancer clinicians and other resources complement its educational, research and service missions, allowing TMU to become Taiwan’s, even the world’s, bastion for cancer treatment and research.

    Along with the Shuang Ho Campus, these will enhance TMU’s teaching, research, and medical treatment while providing top-quality health care and accelerating the development of Taiwan’s biotech and medical services industries.

    • Taipei Medical University Hospital develops “smart medicine”

    In recent years, Taipei Medical University Hospital has imported the latest technological applications, developing “smart medicine” and using the Internet of Medical Things to integrate diverse services and big-data calculations and analyses, combining AI to evolve from basic automation to the advanced smart medical service model. The hospital has implemented a “smart intensive care system,” a health and medical care blockchain platform, remote health caregiving and other new treatment processes.

    Smart Intensive Care System

    Patient physiological data is automatically uploaded with automatic transfer, integration, calculation, and recording for easy access on instrument panels. This saves time, almost 800 hours of record-keeping per month for each employee. AI can help clinical medical treatments develop faster, more accurate and comprehensive assistive and predictive systems. TMU is also pursuing “smart” trends in chronic medical treatment and caregiving for future discoveries.

    Health and Medical Blockchain Platform

    Applying blockchain technology to health care management and referrals offers advantages over traditional paper-based application forms for consultation services. The public can download applications and access consultation reminders, consultation guides, paperless exams, medication histories, and other services. This is like having a medical concierge.

    Remote Caregiving

    This multidisciplinary service model combines medical expertise, care services and information technology to serve aging populations and provide long-term care for chronic illnesses. Through the system’s information platform and a 24/7 caregiver customer center, limitations of time and space are overcome to provide preventative care, disease management and other expert customized services in the community and living environments:

    1. Telehealth: Information and class promotion on healthy living. This focuses on different groups and ages in terms of preventative care, using diverse educational methods to promote healthy living.
    2. Telemedicine: Emergency consultation and caregiving extended to the home after leaving the hospital. Instant online evaluation by qualified personnel during emergencies rank the priority of the situation and provide advice. Care that is safe and reassuring can be provided to acute inpatients along with follow-up treatments.
    3. Telecare for screening and management of chronic diseases: Monitoring and medical responses to physiological data can be combined with diet and exercise to slow chronic diseases’ progression. Screening services such as sleep surveys and electrocardiogram information can be gathered at home using medically certified equipment. This significantly raises screening rates without disrupting day-to-day life, and the information is used by physicians to plan treatments.
    4. “Wholehearted Care”: This recently introduced strategy uses a wearable home-use electrocardiogram watch to monitor health when at home.
