Rector of National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” signs Magna Charta Universitatum

Rector of the National Technical University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» Yevgen Sokol took part in the ceremony of signing the updated Magna Charta Universitatum. The event took place at the University of Lodz (Poland). The Magna Charta Universitatum was first signed in 1988 in Bologna, Italy, and revised in 2020. The document defines the basic principles of higher education for the coming decades and is the basis of the mission and activities of universities. Currently, its signatories are 950 rectors around the world. It should be noted that for the first time in the history of the Charter, it was presented in Ukrainian language. In addition, Rector Yevgen Sokol and Vice-rector Gennadiy Khrypunov took part in the international conference «Universities and Re-Construction of Cities: the Role of Research and Education», where they presented an innovative project of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute scientists on energy efficiency in Kharkiv.

Each year, Magna Charta Universitatum Observatory organizes an international conference to discuss contemporary challenges to upholding fundamental values and serving society responsibly, and holds a solemn ceremony of signing the Magna Charta Universitatum. This year’s conference and ceremony took place in Lodz, Poland. The aim of the conference was to enable universities to respond more effectively to the challenges they face and foresee, and to strengthen their ability to uphold fundamental values for the benefit of society in the face of global challenges and transformations. The theme of the 2023 conference was «Universities and Re-Construction of Cities: the Role of Research and Education». The event featured renowned international speakers who shared their views and held discussions. More than 130 participants representing educational institutions from 37 countries had the opportunity to interact closely during various small group discussions.

The conference was attended by Yevgen Sokol, Rector of NTU «KhPI», and Gennadiy Khrypunov, Vice-rector for International Relations of the university. They presented an innovative project developed by the university’s researchers, Kharkiv Energy Efficient, dedicated to ensuring the sustainable development of Kharkiv in the post-war recovery.

The conference marked a significant event for global higher education – the rectors of the world’s leading universities solemnly signed the updated Magna Charta Universitatum MCU2020. This document defines the basic principles of higher education for decades. The ceremony took place at the Magna Charta Observatory and the University of Lodz. It was attended by the Rector of the National University «Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute» Yevgen Sokol.

The Magna Carta Universitatum was first signed in 1988 in the presence of many political leaders and representatives of society and revised in 2020. The purpose of the revision is to reflect the changes in the world that universities are facing. It has now been signed by more than 950 university leaders from around the world. The Magna Carta Universitatum is based on the principles of academic freedom and institutional autonomy as a guideline for effective management and development of universities. It should be noted that for the first time this year this document (in addition to English and Polish) was presented in Ukrainian language, which demonstrates the solidarity of the international university community with Ukrainian universities. The support of Ukrainian universities was declared not only from the conference tribune, but also during the meeting of the Rector of the university Yevgen Sokol with the General Secretary of Magna Charta Observatory David J. Lock.

Ukraine’s National Technical University holds annual international scientific conference

The annual international scientific conference MicroCAD-2022 was held at the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” (NTU “KhPI”) in October this year. And although the conditions were extremely difficult, which was caused by a terrible war with missile attacks, including during the plenary session, this online conference became a top-level event.

Great honour was given to MicroCAD-2022 by the Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics and the Oliver Buckley Award winner, Professor at Princeton University, member of the Royal Scientific Society (Great Britain), and expert in the theory of condensed media Frederick Duncan Michael Haldane, who spoke at the plenary session. The scientist congratulated the participants of the Conference and noted that the science continues to develop in Ukraine in spite of such hard times. Rector of NTU “KhPI”, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and Laureate of the State Prize in the Field of Science and Technology, Professor Yevgen Sokol, made a report “Education and Science as the Basis for Innovative Development of the state” at the plenary session. He stressed the important role of the Kharkiv Polytechnic, the contribution of its students, teachers, and scientists to the development of innovative products and approaches to education.

Chairman of the Supervisory Board of NTU “KhPI” partner, one of Kharkiv’s leading industrial enterprises – i.e. PJSC “TURBOGAS”, Oleg Kuprigin spoke about the combination of advanced scientific achievements and production technologies in cooperation with Kharkiv Polytechnics.

In addition, reports were made by the founder of the scientific direction “Electrochemical Design, Diagnostics and Prediction of the Properties of Functional Coatings”, Laureate of the National Prize of Ukraine named after Boris Paton, Head of the Physical Chemistry Department of NTU “KhPI”, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Mykola Sakhnenko.

As a result, the participants of the International Scientific Conference MicroCAD-2022, and first of all the plenary session, received strong support for their scientific activities, recognition of the importance of science and education in economic recovery, and innovative development of Ukraine.

NTU “KhPI” participates in program of popularization of science

In our rigorously developing world we must think globally based on scientific platform, which in turn allows us to solve difficult problems and make tough decisions. To achieve this multifaceted goal at the Faculty of International Education National Technical University of “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute” (NTU “KhPI”), practically-oriented educational programs based on the scientific interest of international students and combining knowledge in various areas with using innovative teaching technologies, have been developed.

The objectives of the activities to popularize science among international students of NTU “KhPI” are as follows: obtaining systematic knowledge about scientific discoveries and developments of scientists from the world and Ukraine; acquaintance with various scientific directions and research; the formation of business ethics for the implementation and practical use of scientific developments.

In 2021 in order to effectively implement the above-mentioned, the following activities were carried out:

– online round table, devoted to the International Day of Science. International students took part in the round table, who prepared interesting reports about their scientific work and studies at our university, talked about the development of science in their native countries and in Ukraine, and also shared their plans for future scientific activity at NTU “KhPI”. Within the framework of the round table, the Center for the popularization of science among international students was opened, where students can get acquainted with the specialties and scientific activities of our university, as well as take part in scientific experiments;

– online round table dedicated to career scientific guidance and adaptation of international students “Education. Science. Success” (more than 60 participants from 12 countries). The main task of this event is to provide practical assistance to international students in solving the problems of choosing a future specialty, participating in research projects, and much more.

Participants (international students): Dur Ahmet Enes (Turkey), Tunch Emre (Turkey), Altanbayar Erdenebayar (Mongolia), Du Xizhou (China), Abediju Mariam (Iran), Dou Kai (China), Varol Idil (Turkey), Wan Sі (China), Twilight Ilkim (Turechchina), Zenati Sanae and Muhlis Yalciner (Turkey) and others. Moreover, a youth scientific community of NTU “KhPI” international students has been created. Round tables for international students, held by the Department of Natural Sciences, are bright events where students make their reports to the audience in an interesting, interactive, visual form, which creates an atmosphere of celebration and excellent mood;

3) meetings with leading scientists and visits to leading departments of the university (within the research scientific theme of “Popularization of science among international students”) with demonstration of scientific achievements and startups of our university;

4) participation in the international scientific and theoretical conference “Ukraine and Society: humanitarian and technical development and social progress, 2021”. All these activities play an important role in forming the new worldview of foreign citizens living in Ukraine based on peaceful, appropriate use of scientific achievements, care for the environment and the development of new scientific directions.
