NSU and Heroes for All Partnering to Make a Difference

Heroes for All, a New York-based youth-focused nonprofit organization brought Camp Abilities 2018- a four-day camp experience for kids with visual impairment to Bangladesh. Thirty visually impaired kids were paired up with thirty students from North South University (NSU), American International University of Bangladesh (AIUB), Jahangirnagar University (JU), and Eastern University (EU). These students were trained as camp counselors on the NSU premises by Dr. Lieberman from the State University of New York and her team of two experts from South Carolina University. The two-day training experience was followed by an inclusive educational sports camp at the Sultana Kamal Women Complex in Dhanmondi where the Captain of the Bangladesh National cricket team, Mr. Mashrafe-Bin Mortaza and the former Test Captain, Mr. Mushfiqur Rahim attended the event.

The Office of External Affairs provided support for the training and also helped Heroes for All during the closing ceremony, which was held on the 20th January 2018 in the NSU Auditorium where both the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Mohammed Shajahan and the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Designate), Prof. Dr. G.U. Ahsan were present.

This was Dr. Lauren Lieberman, Dr. Megan Irwin and Dr. Ali Brian’s first visit to Bangladesh and they are looking forward to returning to the camp next year. The thirty visually impaired children, along with the camp counselors appreciated this effort as many explained how they had never thought that an inclusive sports environment can be created for all in any environment. Dr. Rehnuma Karim, Founder and President of Heroes for All thanked North South University for facilitating the pioneering and innovative learning experience and also for allowing the event to take place through their unparalleled support. The event “Camp Abilities Bangladesh 2018” was sponsored by BRAC Bank, Qatar Airways, City Bank, Islam Group, Triple Apparels Limited, Galaxy, Plummy Fashions Limited, Lakeshore Hotels, Star Youth and The Daily Star. Also, the support from Assistance for Blind Children (ABC), who works side-by-side with Heroes for All, made this event a colossal success.
