College scholarships, the dream ticket for undocumented students
Typically, government scholarships are the only source of funding that counselors is aware of for undocumented students looking to attend universities.
Espinoza Salamanca, 27, is the founder and CEO of DREAMers RoadMaps, an award-winning app that helps global undocumented students search for college scholarships. It is a passion project for the Mexican immigrant who moved to California when she was four.
For undocumented students like Salamanca, doing well enough in school to enter college has been a challenging one. According to the Educators for Fair Consideration (E4FC), a non-profit organisation that advocates for undocumented young people, each year an estimated 65,000 undocumented students graduate from high school but only 10,000 graduates from college.
Funding has been identified as the biggest hurdle for undocumented students looking to attend universities. Typically, government scholarships are the only source of funding their counselors is aware of. However, Salamanca did overcome the odds and graduated from Canada College in 2015. Salamanca understands the importance of education and now wants to reach out to thousands of other undocumented students to find the funding that can help them achieve the same goal, using private and philanthropic dollars.
