The Faculty of Built Environment, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), recently hosted a knowledge-sharing session entitled “From Drawings to Decision: AI-Driven Digital Transformation in the Built Environment”, featuring Krishna Kumar @ Krish, Founder and Director of HummingSoft Sdn. Bhd. The programme was attended by IDr Mohamad Faisal Ghazali, Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Built Environment, UiTM, and Prof. Ts. Dr. Hjh. Emma Marinie Ahmad Zawawi, Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment.
The session explored the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the built environment, particularly in relation to how organisations, professionals, and educational institutions can move beyond conventional, fragmented approaches to information and decision-making.
From Silos to Intelligence
One of the key themes highlighted during the talk was the transition “from silos to intelligence.” In the built environment, different disciplines and departments traditionally operate within their own areas of expertise, often resulting in information being separated across architectural, interior design, engineering, construction, planning, and management processes.
The speaker emphasised that “intelligence does not reside within a single department; rather, it emerges through the connection between them.” The integration of information across disciplines can therefore enable more informed decision-making, improved collaboration, and more efficient workflows.
This represents an important shift from simply collecting and managing data towards generating meaningful intelligence from interconnected information. AI has the potential to facilitate this transformation by identifying relationships, synthesising information, and supporting decision-making across different stages and disciplines of the built environment.
AI Literacy in Built Environment Education
A significant part of the discussion focused on the future of built environment education and the need to prepare architecture and design students for an increasingly AI-enabled professional environment. The speaker stressed the importance of developing AI literacy among architectural and design students. Rather than viewing AI simply as a collection of software tools, students need to develop an understanding of what AI is, how it works, what it can and cannot do, and how it can be meaningfully incorporated into creative and professional practice.
The development of AI literacy can be approached through three important stages:
1. Understanding AI: Students should develop foundational knowledge of AI, its capabilities, limitations, ethics, and implications for professional practice.
2. Exploration of the tools: Students should be encouraged to experiment with different AI tools and understand how they can support ideation, research, visualisation, analysis, documentation, and design processes.
3. Bringing various disciplines together: AI provides opportunities for greater collaboration between different disciplines. Architecture, interior design, engineering, construction, planning, and other built environment disciplines can potentially work with shared information and interconnected AI-enabled systems.
The emphasis, therefore, is not simply on teaching students how to use AI tools, but on developing their capacity to think critically and creatively with AI.
Towards an Intelligent Built Environment
The talk highlighted that the digital transformation of the built environment is not solely about adopting new technologies. More fundamentally, it involves changing how knowledge is generated, shared, connected, and applied.
The transition from data to intelligence and from disciplinary silos to interconnected systems suggests a future in which AI can support more collaborative, responsive, and integrated built environment practices. For educational institutions, this transformation also presents an opportunity to rethink how future architects, interior designers, and built environment professionals are educated.
Ultimately, AI literacy will become an increasingly important component of design education. By understanding AI, exploring its tools, and encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, students can be better prepared to navigate and contribute to the rapidly evolving digital landscape of the built environment.
