OGE FKK UiTM: Alumni Inspire Oil & Gas Futures

Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), through the Office of Research & Industry Networking, Faculty of Chemical Engineering (FKK), successfully hosted two alumni engagement programs — FKK Echo: Voices of Our Alumni 1.0 on 23 July 2025 and RE-ENGAGE FKK (Reconnect, Empower, Grow) 1.0 on 31 July 2025 at UiTM Shah Alam. Both initiatives aimed to strengthen oil and gas engineering alumni–faculty ties while enhancing student development.

FKK Echo connected 27 final-year Oil and Gas Engineering students with alumni. His sharing on industry challenges and opportunities inspired students to prepare for career transitions while fostering valuable alumni linkages. Building on this momentum, RE-ENGAGE FKK 1.0 gathered 60 students, lecturers, and six alumni representing Petronas, Halliburton, Interwell, Diamond Key International, Petronas Carigali, and McDermott. The half-day forum included panel discussions and Q&A sessions, exposing students to diverse career pathways, technical expertise, and mentorship opportunities.

Beyond technical knowledge, both programs emphasised soft skills, leadership, and networking, equipping students with critical thinking and collaboration competencies. These engagements highlighted alumni as strategic partners in education, supporting UiTM’s mission to produce industry-ready graduates with the professional agility to lead Malaysia’s energy transformation.

UiTM Deepens Partnership with Fraunhofer IEM Mechatronic System Design Germany to Advance Malaysia’s Innovation Ecosystem

Seeing Germany as a forerunner in the shift to Industry 4.0 and a global leader in manufacturing innovation, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has selected the country as a major partner for its engineering programmes. One of the Asia-Pacific nations, Malaysia, has been selected as the test bed for the Fraunhofer IEM’s first innovation lab. UiTM is the largest public university in Malaysia and is home to more than 160,000 students and 18,000 academics and staff. The intention is to establish conditions under which corporations and educational institutions might collaborate on R&D initiatives. This lab debuted in September 2019 for students, researchers, and the industry, and it features “Digital Engineering” workstations, prototyping technology areas, and workshop and training facilities.

Both institutions have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to work together on future projects, including research, development, and the growth of innovation laboratories. A new agreement has been signed in light of the fruitful results of the first cooperation. The LOI was signed on July 13, 2022, at Fraunhofer IEM in Paderborn, in the presence of Dato’ Seri Abdul Razak bin Jaafar, the Secretary-General of Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE). The long-term objective of innovation laboratories is to establish an ecosystem capable of overcoming the “invention death valley” typically encountered between Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4 and TRL 6. There is an immediate need to establish a framework for collaboration between institutions of higher education and private industry to promote innovation. Meanwhile, Fraunhofer IEM connects the academic world in Germany with the private sector. Under collaboration with Fraunhofer IEM,  industry visits to Diebold Nixdorf, Beckhoff Automation, and GEA Westfalia helped to interact with industry experts and learn more about the industrial environment in Germany.

The program aims to produce well-rounded graduates capable of handling stress, making meaningful contributions to society, and competing successfully in the global job market. The university has issued a statement explaining its plans to become a globally recognised institution by 2025. One of the ways it plans to do this is through bilateral academic-industry cooperation with Germany.

UiTM x SKBA: KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER PROGRAM

Ten students, accompanied by five teachers from Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Anggerik, Section 6, Shah Alam, participated in the Knowledge Transfer Program: Preparation of Organic Insect Repellent Spray (SOPES) at UiTM Shah Alam. This program was jointly organized by the School of Chemistry and Environment (PPKP) and the Research, Industry Networking and Alumni Office (PJIA) of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, UiTM Shah Alam. The participants of the program were given information, guidance and hands-on sessions with lecturers from the School of Chemistry and Environment, consisting of Dr. Sharil Fadli Mohamad Zamri, Dr. Sabrina M Yahya, Dr. Shadatul Hanom Rashid and Puan Norjanah Yuri. This one-day program exposed students and teachers to the introduction and effects of the use of pesticides on the environment and health. Insecticides are widely used in agriculture to control, prevent and destroy pests affecting agricultural production. However, excessive and uncontrolled use can cause various negative effects such as food poisoning in humans, complications to the skin, nerves and human body systems, pollution of clean water and air sources and harm to the environment. Innovations in reducing the risk of pesticide use have begun to receive everyone’s attention. One of them is the preparation of organic insect repellent sprays (SOPES), which have been produced by researchers at the Faculty of Applied Sciences, UiTM Shah Alam. SOPES was developed to provide effective protection to plants and homes without harming beneficial insects and is environmentally friendly and reduces the use of chemicals. The highlight of this program was a hands-on session in preparing organic sprays from natural ingredients as an alternative to insecticides. The students were taken to the Chemistry laboratory at the Faculty of Applied Sciences and taught to prepare the organic spray. The excitement of the students in the laboratory in trying to produce organic insect repellent spray products, can be seen. It is hoped that the experience and knowledge gained from this program can be practiced by students at school and in their daily lives and disseminated for the benefit of all in general.

Cultivating Sustainability: UiTM researchers empower elementary students in green innovation

Researchers from the School of Civil Engineering, College of Engineering at UiTM Shah Alam have actively engaged with the community, since 2022, by implementing a knowledge transfer project that aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. Designed to bring academic expertise into real-world application, the project aims to foster sustainable practices within local communities, starting with a primary school, SK Bukit Kemuning 2.

Supported by a RM20,000.00 UiTM Lestari grant, the project introduces teachers and students to environmentally-friendly techniques for creating organic plant fertilizer. Using mechanized composting methods and effective microbes derived from canteen food waste, the school community has been empowered to produce its own fertilizers, promoting waste reduction and sustainable agriculture at the school environment.

The project has been implemented in phases, allowing for thorough community engagement and skill-building. Evidence of its success can be seen in the active participation of both teachers and students, who are now equipped with practical knowledge to address agricultural and food waste management challenges. Demonstrating the project’s impact, SK Bukit Kemuning 2 has showcased their accomplishments by entering agricultural innovation competitions, securing a bronze award at the Selangor
state level.

Through this initiative, the The School of Civil Engineering at UiTM Shah Alam exemplifies how universities can extend their skills and knowledge to promote sustainable community practices, guaranteeing a positive and enduring impact on society.
