Autonomous vehicles will drastically change how people and goods are being transported around the cities. The observed growing convergence between public and private transportation systems provided policy-makers with the chance to create incentive that can propel mobility to all citizens living in cities, not just to those of the higher economic status.
For decades, our remedy to congestion was simple: build new roads or enlarge existing ones. And it worked particularly in fast-growing emerging cities. However, in more established urban centres, significant network expansions are almost impossible due to high habitat intensity, expensive real estate and fragile public finances. Our city’s vascular system is getting clogged and we should pay attention.
