Dr. Ali Al Soufi is an Assistant Professor at the University of Bahrain with expertise in Information Systems (Business Informatics), Information Science. In his talk in TEDxSakhir, Dr. Al Soufi narrates the challenges of a university-industry collaboration and his journey of establishing a team of students and professors to create highly advanced mobile applications and sell them to organisations in Bahrain.
The main challenge between industry and the academic is difference in mindset between both parties. As such, both are living in two different worlds with varying goals. In addition, there is a myth about academic’s capabilities and quality. Often, academics are perceived to be (1) unorganised and fail to meet deadlines (2) too theoretical (3) lack understanding of industry’s challenges and pains (4) poor in marketing.
