Universiti Malaysia Pahang helps Adam with the Adam’s Chair

Academics from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) ended up helping Adam with the Adam’s Chair after they visited a local primary school in Pekan, Malaysia. Adam, 8, who is a student in Year Two at Sekolah Kebangsaan Serandu, has cerebral palsy at birth and depends on a stroller to move around. Stiff muscles and exaggerated reflexes caused by his cerebral palsy limit his movements and coordination, including involuntary movements and unsteady walking.

Realizing the stroller that Adam used to utilize is overly small for him, Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Haji Nik Mohd Zuki Nik Mohamed, who is the Deputy Dean of Academic & Student Affairs from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, UMP decided to custom-make a wheelchair for Adam. The Adam’s Chair, named after Adam, is expected to help Adam facing challenges in his life.

“There’s a lot of changes in Adam nowadays. He is more excited and eager to go to school. With this chair, Adam can learn and write more comfortably on the attached table like other kids at his school,” said Hafizah Mohamad Hamdan, 27, a single mother whom Adam has been growing up with. Hafizah not only appreciates the efforts and cares shown by the school teachers towards her son, but also thanked UMP for designing the special chair to cater the needs of her son.

The Adam’s Chair, which comes with such features as mobile desk boards, brake and lock systems, comfortable seating, and other security characteristics, was successfully created with the cooperation of a group of undergraduates and academics within a month; it was handed over by Dr. Haji Nik Mohd Zuki Nik Mohamed and his team on 6 September 2018 at the said school.

When it comes to charity and community projects, UMP has been earning a reputation as being one of the most prolific donors in the region. According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nik, creating the Adam’s Chair is in line with university’s agenda in communitizing the technology for the benefits of the local community.
