    UiTM’s Summer Camp for TRU Students Makes Learning English and Culture the Fun Way

    Recently, Universiti Teknologi MARA, (UiTM) Kedah branch hosted the maiden summer camp for Thepsatri Rajabhat University students (TRU, Thailand). The camp which was held from 13th to 26th October 2019 at the university campus embraced several vital activities such as English communication classes, cultural classes, Malay language classes, traditional Malay dance, games, Malay history and civilisation. The event culminated with a cultural tour to two cities, namely Alor Setar and Georgetown. This event was organised by the university staff was led by Dr Wan Irham and assisted by Kamarul Ariffin Mansor, Shafinah Md Salleh, Phaveena Primsuwan and Hasreeyati Ramli. The team facilitated the students to learn culture-related communication skills during the summer camp.

    Assoc Prof Rector Dr Shaiful Annuar Khalid of UiTM Kedah said, “This camp was specifically designed for Thepsatri Rajabat students to nurture lifelong learning in a fun and impactful manner. These activities allow the students to gain new experience outside the classroom and beyond the university subjects.” 

    The camp brought many benefits to the participants. Apart from the English language camp, students were also exposed to different traditional sports amongst the locals. Some of them said that they “they had a rewarding exposure to a different culture and language” while others felt that the camp outing “changed their mind-set” and “allowed a ‘break-out’ from the original perception about other culture”. Students were also able to to enrich their communication skills. Overall, the summer camp was enjoyable and rewarding for both Thepsatri Rajabhat students and UiTM Kedah.
