UiTM Electrical Engineering Brings STEM to Schools introducing Arduino

A STEM program organized by the Center of Computer Engineering Studies (CCES), Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia was attended by 3 teachers and 51 students from a nearby secondary school (SMK Seksyen 7). The STEM program, which was held on 8 September 2019 was themed as “Bringing STEM to SMK Seksyen 7: Arduino Workshop for Beginners”. The main aim of this program was to introduce the use of Arduino boards to participants and to stimulate students’ interest in this technology towards IR 4.0.

The program was officiated by Prof. Nooritawati Md Tahir, the Chair of the IEEE Industrial Application Chapter. The one-day Arduino workshop was run simultaneously in two laboratories. The main trainers for the program Puan Yuslinda Wati and En Meor Mohd Azreen were assisted by 11 facilitators who were 4th-semester students.

This Arduino workshop covered 5 basic Arduino modules that utilize the use of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), Red-Green-Blue (RGB) LEDs and buzzers. To test the participants’ understanding of the given modules, three challenges were presented to the participants to solve. Each team that successfully completed the challenge was rewarded. The program concluded with the presentation of certificates to participants by Dr Roslina Mohamad, the Head of CCES and the program advisor.  The head of Technic and Vocational department from the school, Puan Zaini Bt Jaafar, presented certificates of appreciation to the organizer and facilitators of the program.
