UITM Chemical Engineer Conferred the YSN-ASM Rising Star Award and Bagged the Grand Prize at SIIF 2019 Korea

Young Scientist Network of Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) award is given annually to recognize and acknowledge three most outstanding postgraduate research students below the age of 35 years. Nur Hashimah Alias, a young lecturer from the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi MARA, (UiTM) Shah Alam, Malaysia who is currently pursuing her PhD was the recipient of the YSN-ASM Rising Star award recently.

She was selected out of 18 finalists who underwent a series of workshops and evaluated based on creativity, leadership and team-working abilities. The award conferment ceremony was held on 15 December 2019 in conjunction with the 2019 annual YSN-ASM colloquium at the Palace of the Golden Horses, Kuala Lumpur. All award recipients and finalists were subsequently appointed as alumni and were keen to contribute back to the society and the scientific ecosystem together with YSN-ASM.

Nur Hashimah’s innovation involves a research on the invention of a newly designed method to coat photocatalytic nanofibers onto the surface of ceramic hollow fiber membrane to improve the membrane performance. Her research focussed on the treatment of oilfield by-produced water, during exploration and production of oil and gas using membrane technology.

Prior to receiving the award, her invention entitled “A Newly Designed Hybrid Photocatalytic Nanofiber-Coated Membrane” received a grand prize at the Seoul International Invention Fair (SIIF) 2019, Korea on 3rd December 2019. The invention was designed to enhance the treatment of oilfield produced water during exploration and production of oil and gas. SIIF 2019 is one of the largest invention fairs in the world, hosted by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) and organized by the Korea Invention Promotion Association (KIPA). SIIF marks its 15th anniversary this year with a total of 625 inventions from 27 countries including the United Kingdom, Malaysia and Thailand.

Nur Hashimah’s research profile can be accessed at https://fkk.uitm.edu.my/main/index.php/8-about-us/403-nur-hashimah-alias-2. Currently, she has submitted her PhD thesis and is waiting for her viva voce.
