    Two NYU Abu Dhabi Faculty Elected to National Academy of Sciences

    New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) has recently shared the election of its two faculty members to the prestigious National Academy of Sciences in the United States based on their outstanding performance in pristine research.

    Paula England is a Silver Professor of Sociology at NYU New York and an affiliated faculty member at NYUAD where she teaches on Gender and Society. England’s research focuses on gender inequality at work and home, and explores social class distinctions in family and childbearing patterns. England was also President of the American Sociological Association in 2014-15 and editor of the American Sociological Review in 1994-96.

    Claude Desplan is a Silver Professor of Biology at NYU New York and an affiliated faculty member at NYUAD. Desplan’s research focus include genetic and mechanistic approaches to neural development, with emphasis on Drosophila visual system. He concentrates on the analysis of molecular and genetic controlling cell fate decisions and their evolution. In addition, Desplan is an elected member of the American Association of the Advancement of Science, an elected foreign member of EMBO and an elected fellow of the New York Academy of Sciences.

    Desplan will take on his new role as the Co-Director of NYUAD’s Center for Genomics and System Biology and lead innovative advances in life sciences within the region; while England will be advancing vital research in the areas of gender and inequality.

    England and Desplan were among the 84 new members and 21 foreign associates who were elected in recognition of their acclaimed and continuing accomplishments in original research.
