TU Student Shares his Experience of Winning the Competition at the 19th Indonesia Capital Market Student Studies

Around mid-October, it was decided that a team from Thammasat University (TU) will compete in the ICMSS (Indonesia Capital Market Student Studies). In a blink of an eye, on February 19th, a team consisting of one accounting and two finance students, representing Thammasat University, was showcasing their recommendations for valuing ROBINS:TH on the stage. The journey ended with a happy ending with Thammasat University bringing back the Championship Trophy.

ICMSS or Indonesia Capital Market Student Studies is the biggest and the oldest international capital market event held by students from the University of Indonesia. The competition is regarded as part of the event as the International Equity Research Conference. Contenders are asked to analyze the given stock from various indices and compose a report to recommend what action investors should execute.

The competition requires not only financial valuation skills and in-depth researches but also critical thinking skills in order to come up with an investment thesis. Indeed, for three second-year students, the tasks seemed impossible. Students had to acquire financial knowledge on their own, look up lessons on the internet, and past CFA papers. Luckily, with the help of Dr. Worapong Janyangyuen and several BBA seniors (Bhan Janejarassakul, Napat Inseeyong, etc.), the team managed to bring the trophy back to BBA Thammasat.

Speaking of the final presentation in Indonesia, the experience from the competition week was priceless. A lot of connections with  ASEAN friends were made during the time there. Discussions on cultural differences were done, and the political situations in each country and also perspectives on financial markets were exchanged. The organizing committee welcomed the teams with the utmost hospitality. The culture, the food, and the people were amazing. It was also wonderful to be able to get a chance to visit the stock exchange of Indonesia.

Lastly, the journey would never happen without the support and efforts of the wonderful teammates. Even though the team comprised of only sophomores without any prior expertise in the financial markets, all the members did their best and were able to deliver.

“A special word of thanks is necessary to Nichakorn Sayamipakdi and Ornicha Piriyasanguanpong on their determinations and efforts put on the competition. The past five months are one of the most beautiful memories I have experienced with competing in a competition so far. The results have confirmed our ambitions, yet, the experience we got from this event is far beyond what sophomores could ever ask for,” concludes Tanadol Sirichantakul, the winning team’s member.
