Traditional Medicine: Past, Present and Future Research and Development Prospects and Integration in the National Health System of Cameroon

Traditional medicine refers to health practices, approaches, knowledge and beliefs incorporating plant, animal and mineral based medicines, spiritual therapies, manual techniques and exercises, applied singularly or in combination to treat, diagnose and prevent illnesses or maintain well-being.

Traditional medicine has recently been widely received in Cameroon as a result of the long unsustainable economic situation in the country to a certain extent. The expensive drugs and heightened drug resistance to common diseases such as malaria, bacteria infections and other sexually transmitted diseases has resulted in patients turning to traditional medicine as alternatives. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has partnered with the Cameroon Government to carry out a strategic platform for the practice and development of traditional medicine in Cameroon. The objective of the platform is to integrate traditional medicine practice into the country, establishing an alliance between traditional and modern medicine and to institutionalise a more harmonised integrated traditional practices.

This study aims to provide an insight into the strategic plan and road map put in place by the Government of Cameroon for the organisational framework and research platform for the practice and development of traditional medicine, and the global partnership involving the management of traditional medicine in the country.
