The Purpose of Science is the Improvement of Economy and Life Quality

Prof. Paul Nurse, Nobel Prize Winner, came to Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (AJCUI)

Atma Jaya – Center for Nation Development is developed in order to create an excellent university which is actively involved in philosophical and research development, for the sake of community empowerment, human dignity improvement and social welfare.

Public and educators must understand that science can solve problems to improve culture, civilization, and life quality in order to promote international peace.

Similar to human life cycle, science keeps evolving and therefore human must be ready to face changes. This fact, however, makes science the biggest asset in human life.

This opinion is the key message delivered by Prof. Paul Nurse, a Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine in 2001, in his public lecture regarding his discovery of key regulators of the cell cycle, which leads to better understanding of cancer.

Prof. Paul Nurse held a public lecture with the theme “Building a New Enlightment Towards a Scientific-based Civilization” as part of “Bridges” in Indonesia which took place in Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia, Jakarta (12/3)

AJCUI was honored to be one of eleven local university partners of the International Peace Foundation (the organizer of “Bridges”). Besides Indonesia, this event was also held in Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam and Singapore.

The Rector of AJCUI, Dr. Agustinus Prasetyantoko, said that this kind of scientific activity by inviting a Nobel Prize awardee as a speaker is an effort of AJCUI in inspiring people to aim for global scale.

Inspiration is essential as it will motivate millennial, young researchers, and academicians to keep thinking out of the box to find solutions for social problems.

This program is one of activity made AJCUI become a producer of scientists and philosophers who are able to think critically and creatively in finding solutions to social problems and in developing Indonesia to be a developed country which can compete in global scale,” he said on Friday (12/3) in a press conference taking place in Semanggi Campus.

The purpose of this lecture, he further explained, was to build a bridge between local universities and other institutions in South East Asia through Nobel Prize winner to create a long-term relationship which may lead to cooperation in doing research and others.

Dr. Yuda Turana, the Dean of Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, said that the public lecture by Sir. Paul Nurse was the climax of a series of discussion panels called “Road to Nobel Lecture”, which introduced various topics in medicine, health and biotechnology.

The monthly activity which has been held since June 2018, is an online educational activity organized by AJCUI, which is in line with its strategic plan in digital development and internationalization.

Being chosen as an organizer of public lecture of Prof. Paul Nurse is a big honor for Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia. Furthermore, it will definitely promote the existence of AJCUI, especially Atma Jaya Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy and Faculty of Biotechnology, as an excellent educational institution in Indonesia.

The success of inviting Prof. Paul Nurse shows international trust to AJCUI in research, educational and other cooperation in facing global challenges.

Prof. Paul Nurse is a Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine in 2001 for his discovery of key regulations of cell cycle. In 1987, he successfully isolated the cyclin-dependent kinase 1 (cdk1) gene, which codes cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK), which has important roles in preserving human cell function.

    Digital Learning of Public Lecture

The material from the public lecture by Prof. Paul Nurse can be accessed through a digital platform called Gnowbe. Knowledge Catalyst is a digital partner of Atma Jaya Catholic University of Indonesia (AJCUI) in designing the micro learning concept. This concept facilitates a more conducive learning communities and engagement among participants during and even after the session has ended.

Gnowbe applies the methodology of Learn-Think-Apply-Share in order to make it easier for learners to get, understand, apply, and share knowledge to their friends while learning through existing interaction. It makes the learning become continuous and does not stop only in certain moment, like found in other existing online courses.

According to Rudy Rahardjo, CEO of Knowledge Catalyst, this new technology will influence the point of view of an organization in experiencing and developing effective learning system and in improving the value of Return on Investment from human resource investment.

This cooperation is a part of strategic plans of AJCUI in bringing digital transformation and in adapting to Industrial Era 4.0 Challenge, especially in education.
