The Creation of Students Startup Business through the Implementation of Entrepreneurial Learning Model Plus

The unemployment keeps increasing and the biggest contributors are university graduates. Due to that reason, the university should provide a curriculum that guides its graduates to become entrepreneurs. President University as one of the well-known universities in Indonesia has made a serious effort to contribute towards the settlement of this issue. Four lecturers of President University planned and established the Entrepreneurial Learning Model Plus (ELMP) for university students and alumni by utilizing technology (technopreneurship) through the integration of the business model platform. The four lecturers are Prof. Dr. Jony Oktavian Haryanto, Donald Samuel Slamet Santosa, S.Pd., M.M., M.Pd., Andi Ina Yustina, S.E., M.Sc., and Rendika Nugraha S.T., M.B.A.

Based on their research, in general, university students are lacking entrepreneurship skills due to the minimum amount of supporting system during their study that they have done before. Therefore, entrepreneurship development program or program pengembangan kewirausahaan (PPK) for President University students was established and integrated into the form of education and training that covers a variety of components such as curriculum, education process, education resources and media, educators quality, as well as an evaluation process.

This PPK program that received grants from the Directorate General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia consists of several stages of planning, briefing, and implementation.

The planning and briefing stages were conducted through the socialization of PPK, where university students can apply their team and their business plan to receive funding. Moreover, during these stages, a seminar was held on 19 July 2019 in Charles Himawan Auditorium of President University. The seminar presented four speakers, the Rector of President University Prof. Dr. Jony Oktavian Haryanto, the Director of President Research Center Prof. Dr. Ir. Sony Heru Priyanto, M.M, CEO of Carro Indonesia Alif Priyono, and Prata Praudy Alif who is the owner of Skip Coffee Shop. The presentation materials within this seminar covered issues on the nature of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial characteristics, how to enter the business world, tips on becoming a successful entrepreneur, sources of funding, and calculating the risks that might occur.

During these stages, a workshop on business plan preparation, selection of business plans to determine the recipients of PPK grants/funding, and internship of participants who passed the selection into the business world.

Finally, the implementation stage was carried out by providing grants/funding to twelve selected business groups, including Pacman, an online food packaging business by Prima Yahya Yudistira and Teacherpalace.com, an online study counseling initiated by Mikhael. Furthermore, assistance and monitoring are carried out periodically to ensure their business runs well and develops.

More or less during the three months when the selection process took place, satisfactory results can be observed from how well the students can run their business. Going forward, President University will form the Indonesian Student Entrepreneurs Community or Komunitas Pengusaha Mahasiswa Indonesia (KPMI) which will guide young entrepreneurs especially those who are still university students.
