Thammasat University held a disquisition on Zoonosis control on its 85th anniversary. Thammasat University also signed MOU with Hokkaido University to support research on public health. Specialists have researched Influenza Vaccine. People who are prone to have Influenza, including children, pregnant women, elder, and sick people are recommended to be vaccinated every year.
Thammasat University held a disquisition on its 85th anniversary. The discourse was held by Prof.Dr.Hiroshi Kida, President of Hokkaido University Research Center for Zoonosis Control and Honorary Doctor of Public Health,Thammasat University, class of 2016. The discourse is about “Preparation for Influenza outbreak”. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in order to exchange knowledge and research on public health. The signing ceremony was held on Wednesday 18 September 2019 at Thammasat University, Rangsit campus.
Assoc. Prof. Gasinee Witoonchart, President of Thammasat University, reveals that Thammasat University has been cooperating with Hokkaido University for 4 years. We encourage an exchange of knowledge and experience between personnel. We also support medical research about medicine and vaccine for diseases, especially Influenza Vaccine. Currently, Thammasat University is willing to cooperate in teaching and learning to produce qualified public health students in doctorate degree. TU has been working and researching with Hokkaido University for a long time. The research work are used for the benefits of Thai people. We will keep cooperating and developing human resource and vaccine for diseases.
Prof.Dr.Hiroshi Kida, President of Hokkaido University Research Center for Zoonosis Control, holds the discourse “Preparation for Influenza outbreak” and states that H5N1 is a severe type of avian influenza which detected in birds and spreads to humans. The spread of influenza has led to severe disease and high mortality in Asia since 1997 and spread to Europe, Africa, North America. Later, in China, it was first reported that H7N9 bird flu infected humans.
Two types of bird influenza are of concern because most patients have become severely ill and the mortality rate is higher than other types of influenza. The flu’s virus may mutate to infect people rapidly and quickly spread. Thus, we have to prepare the vaccine and disease control. We also have to build international cooperation in order to efficiently research for Influenza vaccine and bird flu vaccine.
Hokkaido University has sample of 4,000 bird flu virus from 144 virus subtypes (16 hemagglutinin subtypes and 9 neuraminidases subtypes). These samples will be used to make the vaccine for the future pandemic of influenza. Moreover, vaccines from virus H1N1, H5N1, H6N2, H7N7, H7N9 and H9N2 can be used to boost immunity in infected animals.
Education institutions in Japan have conducted well-cooperative research on Influenza vaccine. Therefore, the discourse with Thammasat University is a great success to share research work and protect the public’s health through the prevention of disease.
Prof.Dr. Prasert Auewarakul, Associate Dean for Research, Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University, states that the flu virus is constantly changing. People who already get vaccinated can also infected, especially risk groups like pregnant women which can affect their child and other chronic patients.
Influenza patients in Thailand are estimated to be increased and reduced according to the weather and the prevention at that time. Therefore, we should improve flu-vaccine development as well as prevent the pandemic of flu. People should be concerned of their health and regularly get vaccinated. When you get sick, you should stay at home in order to prevent the spread of disease.
