SUSU Pushkin Institute is Holding Russian Calligraphy Contest among Chinese Students

The Pushkin Institute of South Ural State University has announced the beginning of a Russian calligraphy contest among school and university students in China who have been learning Russian for more than one year.

“When we talk about written language, we always turn to the history of language and its emergence. The history of written language is about preserving the nation’s heritage, traditions, and values. The calligraphy contest aims at helping international students learning Russian to see the long history of the language through the alphabet”, notes Olesya Sharafutdinova, the event coordinator and Associate Professor at the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language (Institute of Linguistics and International Communications, SUSU).

The Pushkin Institute affiliate network will hold the contest for school and university students in China. The participants will have to complete the tasks on special calligraphy worksheets and demonstrate their knowledge of the alphabet and calligraphy skills. Associate Professor at the Department of Russian as a Foreign Language Yulia Kazakova designed the tasks tailoring them to international students. Currently, the SUSU Pushkin Institute is holding the same competition at Tianjin Foreign Studies University.

For more than four years, the Faculty of Pre-University Education has been organising the calligraphy contest for international students at South Ural State University. The competition is an effective way to show international students the difference between the printed and handwritten text for successful language learning.
