Sunway University and York University Sign Articulation Agreement

Sunway University’s Centre for American Education (CAE) exchanged an Articulation Agreement with York University recently. This is the first Articulation Agreement that York University in Toronto, Canada has signed with a Malaysian university and in Southeast Asia.

Signed by Professor Lisa Philipps, Provost of York University and Professor Graeme Wilkinson, Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University, the agreement was brought to Sunway by Richard Ooi, Senior Executive Officer, Academic Administration, Office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic), York University for the ceremony which was witnessed by Her Excellency Julia Bentley, the High Commissioner of Canada to Malaysia.

The Articulation Agreement aims to provide students from the American Degree Transfer Program (ADTP) at Sunway University a smooth transition to York University for the completion of their degree. Sunway University’s second-year ADTP students will be considered for admission into York University’s Bachelor degree programmes.

“We at Sunway are extremely delighted to be the first Malaysian university to partner with York University. The partnership will provide our ADTP students a broader spectrum of choice in terms of programmes and at one the largest universities in Canada. Studying at a campus with more than 50,000 students from around the world will I’m sure be an interesting experience for our students who are going there”, said Professor Wilkinson.

HE Julia Bentley who was at Sunway University to officially open the Canadian Fair said “Canadian educational institutions are renowned for being on the cutting edge in fields such as digital technology, advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and marine industries.”

To illustrate her point, she quoted Professor Donna Strickland a Canadian physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize for ground-breaking inventions in the field of laser physics this year.

“You will be also in excellent company. There are over 86,000 thousand Malaysians who have studied in Canada,” added HE Julia Bentley.

With the Agreement, Sunway University students can now complete their bachelor’s degree at York in 1.5 years or an Honours bachelor’s degree in 2.5 years. Students who have completed individual courses with a final grade C or higher in their ADTP at Sunway University, and achieved a minimum of 2.0 GPA in all courses will be eligible for admission.

Sunway University’s ADTP students who have satisfied all course requirements of years 1 and 2 can be granted course equivalencies toward York University’s undergraduate programmes with the course credit exemption letter issued by York’s Admission Office. Programmes included in the articulation are Computer Science, Natural Sciences, Psychology, Mathematics and Mechanical, Electrical or Chemical Engineering.

Students may receive up to 48 credits towards a 4-year, honours degree programme at York University.

In awarding credit exemptions for studies completed at Sunway University, York University reviews three distinct areas: general education or complimentary studies requirements, intended to provide students with a foundation of interdisciplinary studies; major courses completed in previous studies which can potentially satisfy a specialisation in an admitted subject area or combination of subject areas; and electives or courses outside their major, intended to broaden the educational experience of students beyond their admitted subject areas or general education requirements. Sunway University students are also eligible to apply for York’s international student scholarships based on merit during their study at York.

“York is very proud to have its first pathway agreement in Malaysia with Sunway University. I am especially proud to be back in my home country to witness this partnership and we look forward to welcoming Sunway University transfer students in Fall 2019. We are also looking forward to working with Sunway on other initiatives including Sunway’s Study Abroad in Malaysia programme”, said Richard Ooi.

The American Degree Transfer Program has been developed specifically to allow students to study the first part of their overseas degree at Sunway University. The programme has been designed to ensure that students can transfer seamlessly to universities in North America and also other countries around the world to complete their studies. Various scholarships are available for students looking to enrol into the American Degree Transfer Program at Sunway University.
