Smarter cities – focusing on how not what

Gordon Falconer is a Director at Cisco’s IBSG Urban Innovation practice and has more than 20 years of experience in city strategies, urban property development, project valuations and cluster creation. Currently based in Singapore, he advises various urban development and ICT related agencies, regulators, the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities and he is also on a number of government agency R&D panels.

In his talk in TEDxChiangMai, he makes a case for more focus on the how rather than the what and why in smart city development and implementation.

“Soon, we will be in a world of hyperconnectivity where people processes data and things will actually start to be connected. It is going to do things that we have not been able to do and see things that we have not seen before. However, currently, most of the talk around smart cities is about the why and the what” shared Falconer during his talk.

Hence, what is needed to truly create a smart city that would benefit the society and economy?

Participate in the upcoming QS in conversation – “University-Public Sector Partnerships: Smart Cities” which will be held from 3-5 October 2018 in Singapore.
