Sheikha Lubna: ‘Close the Arab gender skills gap’

The design of educational programmes such that they meet the job market demands is essential to enhance employment among Arab women. Majors at educational institutions, especially universities have the responsibility to make certain that they are able to fulfill a role of future employment while moving forward. This is to ensure the achievement of gender equality.

Women in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region have been found to have lower employment rates as compared to the rest of the world. At present, they only represent 28 percent of the job market in comparison to more than 50 percent in the United States, according to the World Bank. In addition, on the contrary, the UAE has higher women employment rate as opposed to those in the MENA region. The percentage of women in the workforce increased from 34 percent to 46 percent between 2000 to 2014, according to a report by Boston Consulting Group.

The private sector that puts forward a particular opportunity for female graduates include any of those within the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) field. The fourth industrial revolution and emergence of artificial intelligence would require a critical scrutiny of future employment opportunities in the labor force. Profiling would become fundamental to better prepare the education system for niche markets.
