In the most recent development, the issue of the trade war between China and the United States has become the most crucial economic challenge in the world. In this case, the United States asks the World Trade Organization (WTO) to redefine developing countries’ status especially China who inappropriately taking lenient treatment under global trade regulations.
This statement was highlighted by Rendy Utomo, a student of International Relations President University when representing the United State in Economix Model United Nations (MUN) at 17th Economix: Global Economic Challenges. Economix MUN is one of the most prestigious MUN in Indonesia that was organized by the Faculty of Economics and Business Universitas Indonesia with the topic “Free Trade or Fair Trade: Re-examining Perspectives on Trade to Reduce Global Inequality” on 3-7 November 2019 at Soeria Atmadja Auditorium.
The Economix MUN brought together hundreds of participants across ASEAN countries. The participant got the chance, on the sideline of the Economix MUN, to attend the seminar which Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro, Minister of National Development Planning of Indonesia become the keynote speaker.
According to Rendy, the motivation behind his participation in the WTO council is this year’s Economix MUN brought the recent topic that needs an immediate solution by WTO members in order to create fair competition in an international trading system. In this opportunity, Rendy successfully won the “Best Delegate” award.
“Representing the United States in WTO council was kind of challenging since the country I represent actually the country that triggered the trade war itself but I can make a fair resolution for each country,” said Rendy.
Rendy argued that he put his best effort to win the award and he was promoting several resolutions in implementing fair trade such as glorifying redefinition of developing countries to make a fair trade, promoting safety net for marginalized groups and championing the idea of dispute settlement body.
“I do a lot of research, I read a lot of articles regarding the trade war, I frequently visit UN official website especially WTO and lastly I consult with economic experts,” added Rendy.
Lastly, Rendy was happy that his hard work has paid off and encouraged all the students to actively participated in the competition as many as they can in order to show the world that President University students have the capacity to share the best idea to present a better world for all.
