The current economic and social development are a resultant of disruption and we require more thought leaders who can measure knowledge from different dimensions. A profound variation of apprehension is necessary to thrive in the present global economy. At present, the domains of arts and science are relatively distinct and it is essential to bring them closer together through our education systems. This is because they influence the next wave of innovation in society.
Whilst sciences encourage thinking that is logical, analytical and aimed at rectifying well-defined problems; innovation requires characteristics found in the arts: intuition, divergence, fantasy, and attentiveness to solutions that appear through practice. In addition, unlike the sciences, disruptive thinking is often encouraged earlier in the arts. The act of making is so fundamental to its practice that it nurtures the evolving forms of creative thinkings. Art encourages an extensive unstructured initial thinking, leading to results that need great attention to detail. This thinking framework is also the platform for designing innovative and creative technologies. Therefore, it is believed that the intercross of ideas across different fields will generate a new series of creative ideas.
This is an ideology that students and faculty are eager to implement. For instance, “Data as Art” is a course led by faculty from the School of Art Institute Chicago and Northwestern engineering, involving artists and engineers in collaborative work translating sophisticated dataset information into stories and public exhibits. The moment to expand such initiatives is now as we witness an increasing number of students who are eager to work towards the attainment of advanced placement credit that allows them to explore new and challenging ideas throughout their academic years.
Recogising and acting on the integration of art and science in education helps to unravel the various innovative thinking and doing that will help resolve some of the world’s most compelling issues. This will eventually find its way into the workforce and organisations.
