More than 100,000 Indian students are enrolling in Canadian tertiary institutions

For the first time, the total number of Indian students attending Canadian colleges and universities over the last year has crossed the 100,000 mark. According to the data of the study permit holders by country of citizenship from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Canada appealed to 31,975 international students from India in 2015. By the end of 2016, the number increased to 52,890 and reached 44,855 by August of 2017. The figures serve as a near guaranteed predicament in achieving a record-high student enrollment rate by end of 2017.

The increase in the number of Indian students enrolling in Canada’s tertiary institutions can be attributed to the considerably immigrant-unfriendly messages from Donald Trump administration in the United States.

University of Toronto (UofT) is one of the leading institutions that have benefited from the heightened student enrollment rate as it witnessed nearly two-third hike in Indian students. The university’s Vice President International Professor, Ted Sargent, shared that the Canadian government has been actively reaching out globally and is an advocate in making Canada a welcoming nation. This not only benefits universities in Canada, it also positioned UofT at a greater advantage. This is because the institution is located at the heart of Canada’s largest city that is both multicultural and inviting.
