LCCA’s Fashion Course Director Creates Work for London Craft Week

London College of Contemporary Arts (LCCA) is proud to announce that its Fashion Course Director, Sadie Clayton, took part in this year’s edition of the London Craft Week, which ran from September 30 to October 10.

London Craft Week celebrates outstanding British and international creativity. This year, for the sixth time, the festival brings together over 250 established and emerging makers, designers, brands, and galleries from around the world.

For this occasion, Sipsmith London tasked three makers and artists with creating bespoke products and works inspired by the brand’s iconic characteristics, from the materials used to the design.

Sadie was commissioned to create a drinks trolley with copper, a component largely used by the distillery. “The project had to reflect two distinctive elements, the material and the signature swan icon, and I combined the two in the design with the large copper curve.

“Copper is an incredible material and I was excited to have the opportunity to work with it. I’ve used it since graduating in 2013, firstly for the body, creating sculptures as wearable art. For this project, I used a 1.0mm slab so that it was weighty and stable enough to hold the bottles, and the curve was created by hand.”

Still drawing from many fashion design techniques, Sadie frequently creates artworks from copper to bring positivity, and channel copper’s natural healing powers to reinvigorate individuals, communities and the environment. In recent years, she stopped using the body as a base and now applies her sculptures to alternative canvases such as floors, walls and virtual spaces.

Dr Kate Armstrong, Head of College at LCCA, said: “We are very proud to see Sadie representing LCCA at such an important event. London Craft Week is an incredible platform for designers and artists and to be selected to participate is a great honor.”
