A Lecturer of UMY Actively Contributes in Indonesia Railway Infrastructure Development

UMY News – The government of the Republic of Indonesia executes massive infrastructure development, including railway links such as Java’s northern and southern area railways, urban railway, i.e. Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (Jakarta MRT), Soekarno-Hatta airport railway, Kualanamu airport elevated-railway, Jabodebek and Palembang Light Rail Transit (Jabodebek and Palembang LRT), and Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail. Railway development in Indonesia is now focusing on urban public transport attracting larger passenger capacities compared to other public transports and is expected to gradually reduce the excessive number of private vehicles.

A lecturer of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY), Ir. Sri Atmaja P. Rosyidi, S.T., PG-Certf., M.Sc.Eng., Ph.D., P.E., IPM, MASCE contributes as a professional engineer and a safety auditor and assessor in the railway development, particularly in urban railways in Jakarta, Java’s southern coast railway and other railway developments in Medan dan Palembang, Sumatera projects. He also involved in detail engineering design for application of Corrugated Foamed-Mortar Pusjatan (CMP)-a new technology of integration between Corrugated Steel Arch combined with fill materials of foamed-mortar- to railway overpass construction in Purworejo, Central Java, Indonesia. This technology has only been implemented in two projects, i.e. overpass in Bandung and Solo. Indeed, the overpass construction will not take long time and save the cost due to the use of the CMP technology.

Sri conveyed that the railway construction becomes an alternative to tackle traffic congestion in big cities such as Jakarta, Bandung and Surabaya. Nevertheless, the conventional technology has not significantly developed yet. “A maximum operational train speed in Indonesia is only 100 km/h so that we have yet moved to use high-speed rail. Indonesia has Jakarta-Bandung high-speech rail, but the project is still in progress. We aspire to possess Jakarta-Surabaya middle-speed trains with a speed of 150-200 km/h to ease traffic congestion and shift people’s paradigm to utilize public transport. The hindrances are that the infrastructure has not accomplished yet because it requires a lot of cost and we need entire supports from many parties,” declared Sri in an interview on Monday (18/3) at School of Graduate Studies, Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta.

Additionally, Sri devotes himself to fostering this nation under Ministry of Transportation of the Republic of Indonesia. He confessed that his contribution is a moral obligation as a professional engineer, safety auditor and assessor, and a lecturer at Department of Civil Engineering of UMY. “My engagement in the railway projects is similar to a physician who heals patients. As a professional engineer, I perceive to participate in the projects besides teaching. My area of interest is infrastructure engineering and system as a part in the field of civil engineering. Now I am concerning with railway projects as I become a professional consultant to fields of engineering, architect, and contractor,” he stated.

Moreover, Sri has got involved in an engineering document review for railway safety since 2015. He is a safety auditor and assessor of Directorate General of Railways, Ministry of Transportation, Indonesia for the railway project before it is operated. The assessed documents were regarding Jakarta MRT feasibility, Palembang LRT, Jakarta-Bandung high-speed rail, Java’s northern and southern coast railways, a railway station of Pelabuhan Kuala Tanjung and many other national railway projects since 2015. He also involved in the team for railway disaster risk assessment and mapping, which is his three-year observation result on railway tracking from Merak to Banyuwangi, Indonesia.
