The Faculty of Business and Management Students of UiTM Experience Learning Finance beyond the Classroom in Jakarta

Bachelor of Business Administration (Finance), students from the Faculty of Business and Management (FBM), Universiti Teknologi MARA, (UiTM) Malaysia recently organized an international trip to Jakarta. The final year students taking Investment and Portfolio Analysis course with their advisor Madam Zainora Ab. Wahid were given the opportunity to experience learning beyond the classroom in a different way.

The main objective of this program was to give international exposure to the financial sector in Indonesia to the students. As we all are aware, Indonesia’s economy has been growing rapidly, including the finance sector especially with the advancement of Financial Technology  (FinTech).

The academic visit began with Universitas Bakrie, Kuningan where they were welcomed by the Dean of Faculty of Economics and Social Studies, Dr. Dudi Rudianto. As finance students, they had a chance to visit the Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Ekonomi (STIE) Ekuitas in Bandung which is wholly funded and owned by Bank Jabar-Banten, one of the leading banks in Indonesia and a leading Fintech company, Bareksa. With the increasing public consciousness on Fintech, this visit was timely and gave the students a broader knowledge on Fintechs’ significance.

Besides that, they also visited the Indonesian Stock Exchange (ISE) where the students were then briefed on the Syariah stock market since this country is keen to develop its Islamic economy and boost the growth in the Islamic finance sector. The students also had an interesting visit to the ISE museum which showcased the latest trade simulators and motion information graphics. Two UiTM students were interviewed by ISE News team to share their experience and thoughts on investment and stock market.

The trip was not solely academic, but it included various other activities. For example, the students had an opportunity to get involved in a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri (MIN) Cempaka Putih in Tangerang Selatan, Jakarta. They had an awesome time playing and entertaining the Year 6 students with a series of mini-games. Moreover, the students also visited Museum Bank Indonesia where they gained deeper knowledge on the past and present banking system in Indonesia. Students were also invited for a dinner with Associate Prof. Dr. Mior Harris bin Mior Harun, the Director of Education Malaysia in Indonesia and also an academician from UiTM.

Throughout the program, students felt the academic trip had broadened their horizon and surely widened the perspectives that previously was only limited between the four walls of a classroom. In a nutshell, Jakarta is one of the best cities for academic trip where they were really overwhelmed with the experience in addition to the enjoyment.
