Alternative Fuel from Municipal Waste in Cement Industry

The impact of global warming become more apparent since the world is currently experiencing an increase in greenhouse gases (GHG) due to human activities especially in fossil fuel combustion from various industrial processes. In this case, the cement industry is one of the industries that produce a huge amount of GHG emissions from burning coal fuels and calcining cement raw materials.  Hence, it is necessary to find a new fuel alternative to solve such an issue. This statement was pointed out by President University students Riri Asyira (Environmental Engineering 2017), Putri Annisa (Environmental Engineering 2017), and Alifah Shafina (Environmental Engineering 2017), in their scientific paper entitled “Utilization of Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) of Municipal Solid Waste as an Alternative Fuel in Cement Industry”

According to them, specifically, in Indonesia, demand for the cement industry is very high impacted by the higher energy required which led to higher use of fossil fuel.  As a solution, they proposed the idea of the utilization of the refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from municipal solid waste as an alternative fuel in the cement industry which more environmentally friendly.

“I believe it is time to exaggerate eco-industry by implementing the utilization of RDF. It has a great opportunity to reduce landfill municipal waste while at the same time it will minimize the GHG emissions” said Asyira, the team leader

Their scientific managed to get selected as one of the papers that were awarded an incentive in Student Creativity Program – Scientific Article (PKM-AI) by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia in 2019. This scientific article will then be published in the Directorate General of Learning and Student Affairs’ e-journal.
